1 - Make sure the wood is clean and dry.

4 - Previously stained or weathered wood should be sanded, then washed with white spirit and allowed to dry.

5 - Other finishes such as varnish or paint must be completely removed before application of a stain.

Once you have prepared the wood, make sure you mask off the glass to avoid leakage and drips, and make sure you work in manageable sections, so areas don't fully dry out before you have finished them.
