Tips You Must Refer To If Your Website Shows A Downward Trend
So youve done everything right
So youve done everything right. A strong marketing message, a good call to action, some compelling photos, all designed to let your potential customers understand what you do better than anyone else out there selling a similar product or service. And lets say you even hired a marketing company to do your SEO for you. And then, it happens. The day youll always remember-the day you googled one of your keywords, and found youre once again back out in the tumbleweeds with your business ending up on page 20 of googles organic search results, or worse. What happened?
Before you pick up the phone and fire your marketing company, your website designer, or your therapist-take a breath and take a look. At your website. Do either of these tunes sound familiar?
*Ch-ch-ch-anges( to your website): It seems simple enough to avoid but its all too familiar a story. You or your employees have made an easy edit to a page (or pages) of your website. Youve added some information-or taken some information away, perhaps reflecting a new sale youre running on socket wrenches, or removing the secondary location information on your homepage, now that youve closed the satellite office. Or you have simply pressed the update option on your back end, a feature that many templates offer and encourage you to do on a regular basis. Bingo! Inadvertently, you may have erased key metadata or other internal link structures that the search engines used previously to classify your website. As far as Google, Bing, or Yahoo are concerned, your website just fell off the turnip truck, and its straight to the back of the line for you. But never fear-once you know about the problem, you can fix it, and most of the time pretty easily. With a few restorative adjustments to your back end , and some time, youll be back on page one.
*Your Cheatin Heart (or..is there a song called Duplicate Content Never Pays?): The title to this problem says it all. It started with Google requirements for quality content to secure high quality organic rankings-and websites therein. In response, sometimes web designers, copywriters or even the hapless small business owner will try to cut corners and post material on their websites thats published somewhere else on the web, if not on their very own website, as a way to boost the amount of written material on the front end of their website. When two or more pages share the same text-whether on the same site or in two places on the web-the Google search bot gets confused. And worse...sometimes it gets mad. You can lose rankings altogether, stymie the indexing process on a particular page, or affect the rank of other pages unrelated to your site. Any way you slice it, its a problem. Solution? Have original, meaningful content throughout your site, always.
Checking for the two problems outlined above can really help you troubleshoot simple-to-fix issues that otherwise can send a perfectly good online marketing strategy into the outer reaches of the SERP stratosphere, where the organic results are cold and lonely from the lack of visitors.
