Tips & Ideas To Get Closer With Your Camera To Make Memorable Baby Photo Announcements

Photographing babies and small children is notoriously challenging

. When you want them to smile, they cry. When you want them to sit still, they crawl away. Instead of getting frustrated or giving up entirely, there are several tricks and trade secrets to working with babies and children to create memorable baby photo announcements that are really no secret at all.

Lighting And Backgrounds

If there is too much light behind your baby's face, you will be unable to see their features. The opposite extreme, with too much light coming from behind the photographer causes two problems: a shadow of the photographer over the subject and a glaringly white face that tends to end up with the common photo effect known as "red eye." These conditions are easy to avoid with diffused light.

Professional photographers use sheets and lighting from various directions to avoid these problems. While it is not necessary to create a photo studio in your living room to get good baby photo announcement pictures, you can get far better quality pictures by using softer light from several directions at once. Natural sunlight is best and fluorescent lighting tends to be the worst. If at all possible, try taking your baby's pictures outside or close to a sunny window.

Backgrounds for your baby photo announcement should frame your baby's image. You do not want a background that will distract the viewer's eye or overwhelm the image. Neutral colors, landscapes, and bare walls or drapes provide excellent backdrops.

Candid Photographs Make The Best Baby Photo Announcements

Newborn babies, while they will probably not be reaching for the camera, provide their own unique set of challenges. Smiles are infrequent at best at this age. More often than not, your newborn is crying, eating, or sleeping. Obviously, crying babies rarely make good baby photo announcements, though there are certainly exceptions. You can use a picture of your infant wailing at the top of their lungs, red faced and angry to announce to your world of family and friends that the newest addition to your family refuses to be ignored.

Candid photographs are relatively easy to get with newborns. As your baby grows into toddlerhood, those opportunities become more and more rare. There is nothing more precious than a peacefully sleeping infant, especially to new parents. Your sleeping infant can provide ample opportunity to get as many shots as you need to create the perfect baby photo announcement. Keep in mind that professional photographers take hundreds, even thousands, of shots in order to get a handful that they can actually use. Don't be hard on yourself if it takes several attempts to get the shots you want for your baby announcements.

Delightful Distractions Can Save The Day

If you want photographs of your infant in action, it helps to have an assistant who can position the baby and provide distractions. A favorite toy, particularly one that makes noise, can be held above your head to get the infant to look your way and smile. Your assistant can call to the baby, sing a song, clap their hands, or provide some other focal point that will make it look as though your infant is a natural born model. You can also incorporate older siblings in the process. This will prevent them from feeling left out and it is sure to provide photographic opportunities you would have never thought up on your own. Most young children are natural performers and the new baby's siblings will love to be a part of the process and included in some of the photos.

By taking a large number of shots under several different lighting and background sources will give you plenty of excellent shots to choose from when creating your baby photo announcement. Many online greeting card companies provide you with templates that you can customize with your own text, verse, and photographs, creating a truly unique announcement to the world that a new baby has arrived.

Baby Announcement Etiquette

Unlike many other invitations and announcements, baby announcements can be sent to anyone and everyone. When designing your baby photo announcement, be sure to include the new infant's full name, date of birth, height and weight, gender, and other pertinent information. At the bottom of the announcement, you should include the names of everyone in the immediate family, including siblings.

Instead of getting frustrated, you can make taking baby pictures a pleasure with good lighting, clean backgrounds, and help from family and friends. Make your baby announcements uniquely your own with baby photo announcements.
