Tips for Aging and Skin Greasiness by:Laurel Levine

It is uncommon to be concerned about aging and skin greasiness

. Typically, people have more problems with excessive dryness as they age. But, people that had acne when they were young may experience excessive oiliness throughout their lives. There are skincare products that make the problem worse and others that correct the problem. Here's a look at both.

The cosmetic industry has, for decades, relied on petrolatum and mineral oil to make inexpensive creams, lotions, soaps, body wash, shampoo, makeup and beauty aids of all kinds. Those two ingredients do not actually contribute to your outward beauty.

Regardless of a person's complexion type, petrolatum and mineral oil should be avoided. It is the cosmetics industry's reliance on those compounds that created the market for skin-typing. We are told to buy products according to our complexion type, whether it is dry, oily, combination or sensitive.

The vast majority of people have the combination type. But, if all of our cosmetics contained the right ingredients, they could be used by anyone. There would be no need for typing. Of course, the industry doesn't want us to know about that.

If you are bothered by aging and skin greasiness, your first step should be to evaluate the ingredients in the health and beauty aids that you are currently using. The second step is to avoid over-cleansing.

Cleansing, even with plain tap-water, strips away the skin's sebum. If no other cause can be found, such as greasy ingredients in your skincare products, overproduction of sebum is the cause of excessive oiliness. Over-cleansing can stimulate increased production of sebum, as your body tries to replace the oils that have been stripped away.

Use gentle natural cleansers. On an occasional basis, use a deep-cleansing mask designed for aging and skin greasiness. The ingredients to look for include the clay extracts kaolin and bentone gel. The extracts absorb excessive oils and pull dirt out of the pores, but they should not be used more than twice per month. Otherwise, the over-cleansing cycle can begin again.

People with oilier skin tend to avoid moisturizers. But, some moisturizers contain ingredients that help to balance sebum production. For example, maracuja, a special passion fruit extract, helps to regulate sebum production, preventing excessive oiliness and excessive dryness.

If it is not your skincare products and you aren't over-cleansing, another possible cause of aging and skin greasiness could be your diet. Specific foods have been investigated, because they seem to contribute to acne. The theory is that they cause the production of hormones that stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum.

The foods to avoid are mostly simple carbohydrates like white rice, potatoes and processed sugar. Other foods are particularly good for your skin's health. Those include fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

It could be that there is simply too much fat in your diet. You might try cutting back on fatty foods. Sebum is composed entirely of fat.

Now that you know this, don't be too concerned about aging and skin greasiness. If you try the suggestions above, you should be able to resolve the problem.
