Tips for Catching Big Northern Pike
Northern Pike are great game fish that give anglers a real run for their money when it comes to landing them
. If you want a big trophy Northern Pike, there are a few things you can do to help you catch that coveted trophy pike.
Northern Pike are voracious feeders who like to establish themselves as high on the food chain as possible. Some of the best lures to use for large pike are those that look like other fish. Seeing another fish eat seems to anger Northern Pike! A lure that looks like another fish in "his" stomping grounds will cause the Northern Pike to strike on that lure. They do like to follow things, and they will often follow a lure right up to your boat.
You can create a lure that looks like a fish, or you can purchase one. This is a good use for some of your old, ratty or chewed up lures. Take the hooks off a broken Rapala lure, and then attach a black steel leader, then another leader to the back of the Rapala with a spring slip-ring. Then attach your DareDevil, or whichever lure you want to use. This makes the lure move through the water and appear to the pike to be a fish that is eating. Pike hate to see another fish eat, even other Pike, though they aren't given to cannibalism. This is an almost-guaranteed way to get the Pike to strike on that lure. Once he strikes and you set that hook, you just have to fight him into the boat.
Large Northern Pike feed on whitefish, Chubs, Walleye, Suckers, and small hammer-handles. They generally will not bother with bugs, frogs or minnows. These voracious feeders will often strike on the bait more than once. They may bump or hit the bait several times. Though they give a lot of fight before finally being landed, these game fish are notoriously easy to catch. There are many anglers who have reported that they caught the same fish over and over again! The fish strikes on the bait, lets go, strikes again. His appetite is so huge that he forgets the bait stuck him in the mouth, and bites again.
Shiny baits work well to attract the attention of Northern Pike. In Ontario, Canada, anglers report that red and silver and yellow "five of diamonds" DareDevils make excellent lures for Northern Pike. The Pike also like jigs, Rapalas, and Thundersticks.
Northern Pike are easy to catch, give plenty of fight, and are very popular game fish because of the ease of catching them and because of the fight to land the fish. Sporting anglers just love these big trophy fish. Many people prefer pike fishing over bass fishing. Bass will give a good fight, but you can't see them in the water, they rarely follow bait, and they can be picky eaters. Pike are definitely not picky eaters. If you have bright, shiny lures, or bait that looks big enough for his taste, you will catch a Northern Pike.
