First off, what is active x control? It is a type of computer program that was introduced by Microsoft Corporation in 1996. There are a number of Microsoft programs that utilize this framework such as Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, and Microsoft Visual Studio. But for this purpose, it is important to evaluate how you can use active x control for the Internet Explorer and how to establish the right settings.

The activation of the active x control on your Internet Explorer offers users more control on how they handle the browser. Those who create viruses have taken advantage of the fact that an active x control is used for doing a specific task on your computer. Hence, they would use active x control to execute a variety of commands on the computer, such as deleting important files or sending unauthorized emails to every contact on a person's list.

Although Windows and the Internet Explorer have made slight variations to how the active x control was used for malicious purposes, you can still use the control in the same way as before. In fact, the active x control continues to be used widely because it enables developers more options when it comes to programming. Hence, Microsoft has not abandoned support for the application but instead improved their security measures to ensure safety of the users.

How do you configure the active x control such that you can address security problems on the Internet Explorer? You must first enable unused active x control to run without having to execute a prompt. Since this is disabled by default, this forces the IE to prompt the user before actually running the active x control application. However, this usually happens only when any of the following conditions are not met: the controls is designated on the pre-approved list, the controls were used on an earlier version of the Internet Explorer, and if the control is automatically enabled upon the download process of the higher versions of Internet Explorer.

The next step is to allow scriptlets for the control but this shouldn't be tweaked unless there are problems encountered with opening certain web pages. This support was phased out since IE 5, which explains why users might encounter some problem using it. This one though would fall under as plug-in, but is used as one of the basic programming languages that increase the interactivity on a web page.

If you want to set automatic prompting for active x control, you must launch the Internet Explorer on your computer. Then, go to the Security and select the appropriate Internet Zone. You can tweak the security level and there are individual security settings according to your preference. Once you are satisfied, click OK before re-starting your computer such that all the changes you made will become full effect.
