Tips for Exercising Safely When Suffering From Fibromyalgia

Tips for Exercising Safely When Suffering From Fibromyalgia

If you are suffering from fibromyalgia you should take extra caution when it comes to exercising. Exercise is important in helping to ease your pain and strengthen your muscles, but not taking the proper precautions may leave you in a worse state than previously. Following these tips will help to prevent a further injury to your muscles:

Begin at Your Own Pace

Always begin at your own pace, even if that means that you will only be able to exercise a few minutes each day. Every day will be a baby step that eventually will lead to greater steps, longer sessions and more challenging exercises.

It is okay to feel a slight pain as a result of the exercises when you first begin, but those pains should disappear within a few days or so. If any pain persists, then you need to seek further help from a trained professional.

Always Do Your Stretches

Stretching before you begin your exercise session is essential as it helps the muscles to warm up gradually so that further injury to them can be prevented.

Some fibromyalgia sufferers find that their muscles are too stiff and painful to stretch, and for those it may be helpful to soak in warm bath water prior to stretching. The warm water will naturally open and relax the muscles so that when they are stretched, it will not be as painful.

Breathing

Breathing correctly is just as important as stretching, as breathing helps to deliver oxygen to the organs and muscle tissues. Oxygen is needed to create more energy, and it also helps to prevent lactic acid buildup within the muscle tissues. Studies show that those who suffer from fibromyalgia have high levels of lactic acid, thus breathing correctly is all the more important.

When breathing correctly, your stomach should expand with each breath that you inhale. If you find that your stomach does the opposite, then you need to practice until it expands when you breathe in.

When practicing, it is best to lie down on your back and breathe deep into your stomach instead of keeping the air in your chest. Breathing into your stomach is called breathing with the diaphragm, which uses the full capacity of your lungs. It ensures that your body receives the amount of oxygen that it needs.

Meditation

Since fibromyalgia involves both the physical and emotional parts of the body, it is very helpful to work meditation in with your exercises. Meditation can help to relax your mind as well as your body, which in turn can help to alleviate the symptoms of depression and anxiety, as well as ease the physical pain. Meditation is also very helpful for helping you to relax before bedtime.
