Tips for Finding the Right Balance
One of the most difficult challenges I have faced since becoming a mother is balancing my career and life at home with my family. Most days, I find myself trying to get through each task and not enjoying baths, bedtime, and other precious moments with my children. The first major step in achieving balance in your life is getting organized. When I returned to work after having my first baby I was overwhelmed with trying to work and be a Mom. It was exhausting getting my baby and I dressed and to work and coming home to cook dinner and do baths and bedtime. In fact, my husband and I were so tired on my first day back to work we passed out on our couch and left the garage door open all night!Early on, I tried to do it all and made the mistake of not asking my husband for help. Not suprisingly, the result was that I became overwhelmed and resentful that my husband was not doing enough. To avoid this, list all of the tasks that you need to do and negotiate with your partner who will be responsible for each task. You may have to teach your partner a new task, but once it is performed well, heap lots of encouragement on your partner so that he has confidence to do it next time.If you can afford to spend some money, outsource some of your weekly tasks. Before my first child was born, my husband and I did everything ourselves including yard work and housework, we even did our own house renovations. With a long work week and only two sort days at home with the kids, we decided to pay for someone to clean the house and mow the lawn. Now we can spend more time with our kids on the weekend.Communication with your partner is also critical to ensure that you can juggle your busy morning and evening schedules. Keeping a large wall calendar will also help you keep track of everything on the schedule. You and your partner should review each week the following week's activities.Try to complete big tasks, such as laundry in available blocks of time. I have found that by starting my laundry earlier in the week, I avoid spending most of the weekend on washing, drying, and putting away the clothes. Learning to multitask is essential. If you can do a load of laundry while reading to your baby, you will eventually get through your weekly tasks. Most important of all, save time for yourself so that you will have the stamina to do all of the things you need to do for your family. Go for a walk or run, meet girlfriends for lunch, or read a great book you'll feel better and be a better wife, businesswoman, and mom.
