Tips for Getting the Right Head Shots as a Web Designer

It's typical for a web designer to be asked to include an "About Me" page for a client and even possibly their staff. Along with that, most web designers probably know that head-shots are a very good idea to include on this page with everyone's description. However, head-shots can be somewhat hard to obtain, or at least suitable ones for placement on the web.

There are some clients who might offer you a group shot with the thought that you can perform magic with a little crop and cut through Photoshop. As you probably know, it's really not that easy.

If you are developing an "About Me" page, and would like head-shots to go with each employee's description, here are a few tips that will help you get the right ones.

- A plan: If you know you need a head-shot or a head-and-shoulders shot, tell the client as soon as you know that this is going to be the plan. Tell them you are adding these photos to the page and for it to work, you need these specific photos.

- Background: Typically, when photographing a head-shot, that's all that should be in the photo, hence the name "head shot." Additionally, the background should be plain or simple, and there shouldn't be anything else happening within that shot.

- Shadows: If you are taking the photos with possibly the background being a wall, make sure they aren't standing too close. If they are, a shadow will be cast and your subject will have a black halo around them. In the end, this will cause a lot less headache and less time spent on editing.

- Outside: Generally, the outdoors has the best natural lighting, and if you're not a professional photographer with flash in hand, going outside may be your best bet.

- Hire a Professional Photographer: This may or may not fit your client's budget but typically, it isn't very expensive to hire a studio photographer. Some of your clients may decide that this would be the best idea to keep their photos as professional as possible. Therefore, hiring a professional photographer might be just what they need.
