Tips for Successfully Caring for Orchids Indoors
Part of the challenge of growing orchids lies in understanding their unique growing environment needs and characteristics. And, how challenging could it be if the growing environment is indoors? Well growing and caring for orchids indoors shouldn't be more difficult, as long as you are equipped with the right information on how to care for them.
Today, many people are taken by growing orchids indoors because orchids are easily available and the orchid hybrids that are being grown have been cultivated to suit indoor environments. Orchids are bred en masse to satisfy the growing demand for houseplants with a difference. This has opened up a new indoor growing experience, with blooms lasting for weeks or even months, compared to other pot plants.
But there's quite a lot to growing healthy orchids indoors. Indoor care is trickier and more demanding. You will have to spend more time with them than i you were growing them outdoors. Factors like positioning, watering, temperature and humidity are important in achieving successful orchid growth indoors.
The first step will be choosing your orchid variety. Phalaenopsis and Miltoniopsis take the lead as the best choices because they are the most adaptable and easy to grow and flower. Always avoid orchid plants with black or brown patches on their leaves as this indicates plant disease.
A good rule would be to select plants with bright green, healthy looking foliage as these have the best chances of success.
To provide a good growing environment and to be closely emulating the orchids' natural habitat the following factors must be addressed correctly:
Light. Indoor orchids will be happy in shady conditions. They do well with indirect and filtered light and the best place for your orchids to achieve this is near a window. But you have take note that too little light will make the orchid leaves turn dark green and flowers will not bloom. On the other hand too much light burns the orchid leaves.
Humidity. To maintain a sufficient humidity for your plant, place them on a humidity tray or install a humidifier. These methods will ensure that the orchids receive enough moisture and the roots are kept moisturized but not immersed in water.
Temperature. This varies according to the variety of orchids you have. Some prefer warm temperatures while other varieties prefer it cooler. The majority of indoor orchids can tolerate a warmer climate. Humidity and air circulation must be maintained for warmer environments to keep the plants from drying out.
Watering. Water the indoor orchids once or twice a week and more during the summer months and the growth season. Do not over-water your plant as this will promote fungus and other diseases and will eventually kill them. It would be best to check the potting medium if it is truly dry before watering your orchids.
Growing orchids indoors is something that will bring you much joy as long as you keep these tips in mind.
In the marsh pink orchids'faces
With their coy and dainty graces,
Lure us to their hiding places
Laugh, O murmuring Spring!
