Tips for Using Negative Space in Graphic Design

Using negative space in logos isn't something you can exactly teach. it requires vision and creativity which is just something you either have or you don't. However it is something you can explain and show examples of, which is what this article will do. Here are a few tips to creating a negative space logo for those not born with the natural talent to do so.

1. First, you must understand what a negative space design consists of. Negative space is the part of your canvas devoid of elements. It is sometimes referred to as white space, but it doesn't necessarily have to be white if your design is on a dark background.

2. Your negative space element of your design must serve a purpose. A good logo has a message and you don't want your negative space contradicting or distracting from that message.

3. Conceptualization is the key to employing negative space. Unfortunately, this is the part of the design process which is either serendipitous or requires a more abstract mode of thinking.

4. There are a number of design blogs and publications which have featured collections of particularly effective negative space logos from which you might draw some inspiration.

5. Keep these different methods or types of negative space implementation in mind:

Duality:

Placing two symmetrical shapes in close proximity to each other sometimes produces a full image between them in the negative space.
