Tips for choosing the right curtain poles

There is no doubt that the right choice of curtains can really add a touch of style and co-ordination when decorating a room.

The huge variety of colours, styles, patterns and textures means that you are bound to find the perfect curtains to suit your taste, but all curtains need to be hung so choosing the right curtain poles is just as important.

Perhaps the most important element to consider when making this choice is the size of curtain poles you require - both in terms of length and diameter.

Lightweight curtains do not require particularly large poles, but you should always make sure that the diameter of the curtain pole is in keeping with the size and style of the windows you intend to dress.

If your curtains are going to cover large glass windows, try to choose poles with a diameter that brings a sense of balance. If the diameter size is too small, the pole will be overpowered by the window. Equally, if you choose poles with very large diameter measurements there is the danger that they will look out of proportion with the weight of the curtain fabric.

Unless you feel particularly bold, try to choose medium-sized poles as these are versatile and fit with most window sizes and curtain styles. They will also support the weight of most curtain fabrics, which is extremely important as you do not want to put unnecessary strain on fixings or have to deal with curtain poles coming loose and falling from the wall.

When you set about trying to choose the right curtain poles, it is always a good idea to keep an image in mind of the look you are trying to achieve. Do you want the poles themselves to be an eye-catching feature, or would you prefer them to blend into the background?

Decorative poles stand out and will serve to enhance the appearance of you curtains, while smaller, concealed poles are more understated and will not be noticed, making your curtains the real focal point.
