Tips for driving in Spain

If you are considering driving on the Costa del Sol or indeed anywhere in Spain whether in your own vehicle or in a hire car there are some rules and regulations you should be aware of in order to avoid the possibility of being fined.

Warning Triangles These are a requirement for all vehicles in Spain and you will need two of them. If you hire a car then before you accept the hire car ensure that they are in the boot as it is the driver of the vehicle that is liable and will be fined. Some hire companies do not provide them as standard and will ask for a deposit if they are to include them.

Reflective Jackets Again these are a legal requirement for anyone that needs to stand on or by the highway due to a malfunction of the car or tyres. The reflective jackets must be put on before you exit the vehicle which means that you cannot keep them in the boot.

Driving License When driving you must have your driving license with you at all times and it is very advisable to also carry your passport as you will be asked for these documents should you be stopped by the police for any reason.

Spare Glasses If you need glasses to drive it is a legal requirement to have a spare set in the car should you break or lose your main set.

Paperwork Ensure that all paperwork for the car is present such as the permiso de circulacion (the equivalent to a log book) and the insurance documents. If you are driving a car from overseas you will need to make sure you have the owner's document and a green card or international insurance cover.

If you are from the UK and driving in Spain remember that cars drive on the right of the road and that very rarely can you turn left from a main road. You will need to look for special points to change direction.
