First, I would like to say that no one can force you to be interested in the Vietnamese language If you are not. But You should be aware of the importance of it whilst you are living and working in Vietnam .
You will immediately see the difference in the reaction when you speak Vietnamese with local people. They are pleasantly surprised and more sympathetic to your case. The Benefits you gain are amazing !
For example, while negotiating, knowledge of the Vietnamese language, can assist you better prices when bartering for goods and services. You will also be able to search online for more economical, comfortable places to live, or good local restaurants . . . and gain an advantage in meetings, relationships or interactions with locals .
Of course learning any language is a difficult task, and Vietnamese is no exception. However, there are many ways to make the task of learning a language easier, but only you can find what works best for you.
Here are some tips that will help you get satisfactory results when learning Vietnamese.
1.Motivate yourself
If you are not motivated to learn Vietnamese you will become frustrated and give up. Ask yourself the following questions honestly :
_ Why do you need to learn Vietnamese ?
_ What skills do you need to learn/improve ? (Communicate / Reading / Writing / Listening)
_ Which subject are you interested in ?
_ How much time and money are you interested in investing to learn Vietnamese. ?
2. Take time and be patient
Learning a language is a gradual process . it does not happen overnight. Learning Vietnamese takes time and patience. Try to relax and take it easy. Make learning a habit. Try to learn something every day. It is much better to study 1 hour each day than to study for 7 hours once a week.
3 Practice
Daily practice is very important. Create and grasp opportunities to practice Vietnamese with locals. Practicing Vietnamese everyday and be confident you will find that the more you use Vietnamese the better your Vietnamese will become.
Don't worry about making mistakes. In fact, the more mistakes you make the more you will learn from them. Your attitude towards learning Vietnamese and the way you perceive it will determine how well you progress.
4 Vocabulary
The important thing you need is building your vocabulary is more stronger day by day, Because without words, you have nothing to work with. Learn practical words and phrases that you often use .
For example, you don't have to learn the words for volcano, long-range missile, or life on Mars if you have a trip planned to Phan thiet tomorrow. Instead, learn words like the sea, seafood, surfing, wind, resort, mud-bath, sunbath, bikini & shorts, etc
It's a good idea to set up the Lac Viet dictionary software on your computer or your phone. Also, attempt to learn vietnamese through Books, CDs, Films and songs.
.5 Pronunciation
Vietnamese is a tonal language. The six tones used will change the pronunciation and consequently the meaning of words. For example if you say " ban " with a rising tone it means " sell " bn . If you say it with a drop tone it means " friend " bn
So make an effort to emphasize these tones. It helps to mimic as well, you can copy a native speaker to learn the correct pronunciation ,to match the pitch and meter of a native speakers.
6 Ho Chi Minh & Hanoi style
Spoken Vietnamese has 2 main dialects: Northern ( Hanoi ) and Southern ( Ho Chi Minh) which are different due to their geographical locations in Vietnam. Basically they are the same one only different accent. Its like the spoken english of England and english of the United States. So its still possible to communicate with people of Hanoi easily after learning vietnamese in Ho Chi Minh City. Otherwise.
If you wanna speak vietnamese in a modern, youthful, dynamic style, learn the southern dialect.If you prefer to speak vietnamese in a formal & soft style, learn the Northern dialect.
By the way, if you are single, why don't you get a Vietnamese boyfriend or girlfriend. It could be nice to learn & practice . until your Vietnamese is good enough, kick them off ! ( joking)
