If you're keen to ensure that your teeth and gums are in good shape, here are a few tips to bear in mind.
At the most basic level, good brushing is paramount. Many dentists and oral hygiene experts disagree on brushing techniques but almost all are agreed that teeth should be brushed at least twice a day. The key phrase here is 'at least'; many dentists also recommend brushing teeth after lunch so that bacteria and plaque don't have time to build up between the middle of the day and bedtime. What's more, certain beverages - like sugary sodas, artificially-coloured soft drinks, red wine and even tea and coffee - have the potential to stain teeth so brushing is also advisable after consuming such drinks.
The act of brushing teeth should also be well-controlled. While it's usually advised that teeth brushing should last at least two or three minutes and should concentrate on all sides of the teeth and tongue, bristles shouldn't be too hard or approach too close to the gums. This may cause gum bleeding or receding gums in later life. Flossing is another way to maintain oral hygiene and it can eliminate bits of food between teeth that cannot be reached by a manual or electric toothbrush. However, over-flossing may also cause bleeding so it's crucial not to overdo this particular dental process.
The use of mouthwash is another area that is subject to disagreement in the oral health world. While some advertising campaigns stress the importance of mouthwash to a successful oral hygiene regime, other specialists have claimed that using mouthwash may wash away the beneficial effects of toothpaste and instead recommend that mouthwash only be used to treat gum diseases when recommended by a dentist.
If you're still confused by what constitutes good oral hygiene, it's worth remembering that all teeth are different. Just because an electric toothbrush seems to suit someone that you live with, that doesn't mean it will work for you.
