Tips for proper placement of Wheel chocks

Safety is the goal when using wheel chocks. To get to that "safe place," with wheel chocks or any other safety device, proper use is always imperative if the device is to get the job done. While you may already know that you must set the vehicle in Park and put on the emergency brake, do you know what to do in specific grades and for more than one axle? Here are a few tips for proper placement of wheel chocks. Graded or Inclined Surface

Wheel chocks should be placed in the direction of the grade in which the vehicle is facing. This means that if a truck is facing uphill, two chocks should be placed, one on each tire, at the back of the truck. That is, if the heaviest axle is at the back of the truck. Chocks need to be placed on the heaviest axle of the vehicle. Unknown or Neutral Ground

When parking on a surface on which you cannot tell the grade because it appears flat, both wheel chocks should be placed on the driver's side, front wheel. There is a tendency for unchecked wheels to roll, especially if the transmission is not in Park. Dual Axle Chock Use

A dual axle vehicle, or a truck pulling a trailer should chocked on both axles, especially it parked on a grade. It's a safety concern especially when one of the axles is heavily weighted. One instance is when a wheeled piece of equipment is on the trailer and is "driven" on or off. If the trailer is not chocked, it has the potential to jack-knife the trailer and the truck, thus making the truck wheel chocks ineffective. By using two sets of wheel chocks, it diminishes the load by half than by using just one set. Snug and Square

It's very important that wheel chocks are placed snugly and squarely against the tires on a firm surface. If there is any question that the chocks will not hold because of an unstable ground, the vehicle should be re-positioned. More importantly, wheel chocks should be used on the vehicle for which they are purchased, and tested before use. Chocks purchased for a small utility or service truck are not appropriate for a half-ton truck with a trailer. Holding apparatus, or wheel chock mounting brackets, can be purchased to hold the chocks on the truck so that they don't bounce around in the back of the truck with supplies and work equipment. Although all of the above tactics are appropriate for most uses of wheel chocks, it is the responsibility of the individual using the chocks to employ the best method possible.
