Tips on Choosing Running Shoes

Running can be considered an exercise and a sport. Like any other exercise or sport, runners need equipment so that they can do their sport safely and comfortably.

The most important equipment a runner can have is a good pair of running shoes. Running shoes protect the person from shrapnel, stones and debris lying around the pavement. More importantly, good quality running shoes help maintains a runner's balance, preventing sprains and other foot injuries.

There are important tips in choosing the right shoes for you.

First, consider purchasing your shoes from a specialty store for running. Not only they will have an extensive line-up, the staff would most likely be very knowledgeable about the right shoes for you. Typically, they will check your foot size, foot type and stride pattern then recommend the correct shoes for you.

When you go shopping for running shoes, do it in the afternoon. This is the best time to fit shoes because your feet will have swelled to their maximum size. Also, keep in mind the kind of socks that you are going to wear. The thickness of the socks is another factor that can affect the fit of the shoe.

In fitting the shoes, do not settle for those that are too small for your feet. It is also not a good idea to choose a shoe that is exactly the size of your feet. When your feet swell, or when you wear socks, the tight fit might become painful. In that case, you may develop blisters from the constant chaffing.

Choose a shoe wherein the tip of your longest toe is half of an inch farther from the tip of the shoe. Your toes should be able to move when you flex them.

Keep in mind that running shoes are your first line of defense against foot injury. Therefore, once you have put on the shoes, get up and walk around. You might want to run or jog around. What you are trying to check is the feel of the shoe. Is it comfortable? Does it offer a perfect balance when you step on it? Does it hug the ground firmly? If the answer to these questions is no, then skip on the shoes and find another pair.

Also keep in mind that the mid soles of the shoes get worn off at 400 miles. When this happens, the pair is no longer safe to use.

If you have the budget, it is a good idea to buy two pairs of running shoes so you can change them each day. This doubles the life expectancy of each pair.

Once you bought the running shoes, it is time to break in the pair. Breaking in the shoes allows the shoes to expand and allows your feet to get used to the shoes. Shoes usually break in within 60 to 70 miles of running.

Following these tips, you will have running shoes that you can depend upon for safety and comfort.
