Getting into the best US colleges could be quite difficult especially if you don't have a stellar high school academic record or you're not that rich

. Nonetheless, there are a few steps that you could do in high school that could help you be a step closer to getting into the best college of your choice.

First thing to remember is that the guidance counselor is your friend. The guidance counselor can help you develop a plan so that you can get in the college that you want by helping you choose the proper classes to take as well as helping you with your application with different schools. If you think you need some extra help, then there are private counselors that could help you out.

You should also pick the classes that you need to take depending on the degree that you want to enter into. If you can, enroll in a summer schooling program, it would be very impressive to colleges if they see that you are willing to put in the work and the time to get what you want.

If possible, take the best and most difficult courses possible including those that could give you college credits. Remember that a good grade in a hard class would look as impressive if not more impressive than an excellent grade in an easy class. However, you should also avoid too many difficult classes than you can handle.

You should also do well in your SAT's. This would entail a lot of studying on your part. Don't worry though, all the hard work that you'll put into this will eventually pay off if you get into a good college. If you don't do so well, then it is a good idea to explain why you got a low score by addressing the issue in your letter of application or in your teacher's recommendation letters.

In addition, you should also try to participate in meaningful activities outside of your school. Always keep in mind that colleges are looking not just for students with good grades but those who are also well-rounded and have the potential of being a good citizen in the future. When it comes down to it, its all about showing them that you deserve to get in and that they would see how dedicated you are to achieving your dreams.
