Tips on buying a car online

From dishwashers to desert islands, wardrobes to wing nuts; it's possible to buy just about anything online these days

. The advantages are obvious too, mainly as it opens up the possibilities of buying goods from anywhere in the world, and the price is usually a good deal cheaper too. But what about when it comes to buying something that you know you should really see physically first, like a car?

Buying a car online has become easier and easier in recent years as more buying tools are made available online and the risk of being ripped-off has been greatly reduced as a result. Like buying a second-hand car in the real world, haggling can still often be a feature of buying online, so don't be put off by fixed prices and hard-nosed sellers. When it comes to actually choosing and buying a car though, there are a few things to bear in mind before handing over any cash.

The first step is research. Know what model you are after, and preferably what year too, so that you don't waste hours or days searching for the right car all over the web. Once you have a car in mind, go and find it in the real world first, ideally at a car showroom, and make sure that you are happy with all of its features. If you get the chance, take it for a test drive and make sure it definitely ticks all of your requirements.

Next you need to look at prices. You probably have a price in mind but there are now many websites which, like utility price comparison sites, act as aggregators for dozens of different car sellers. Simply type in the car you are after and these websites will pull up a list of all the models available online; including prices. From here you can either make contact with a few sellers to try and arrange a viewing or the best price, or you could visit specialist online auction sites which have automobile sections. Using an auction service can allow you to pre-determine the amount you are willing to pay for the car of your choice and, if the auction doesn't reach that price, you will get the car for cheaper - saving you money.

Another benefit to buying a car online though is the time you can save. Gone are the days of buying papers and flicking through the classifieds looking for adverts, before driving out to the seller's house and checking to see if the car is as advertised. Today, you can check out as many cars as you like from the comfort of your home and, if you see one you like, simply email the seller and ask any questions, or even request more detailed photographs. Always look out for any scrapes or bumps though, as a simple chip in the windscreen could lead to a full windscreen replacement if you're not careful.
