Tips to Check Your Credit File
Checking your credit file is important for having a good knowledge about your financial status or information. These files are kept by credit reference agencies and you can ask them for a copy of your credit file at any time. You just need to write to them to send you a copy of your credit file. You might be asked to provide the following information in order to get a copy of your credit file.
Your full name, including middle or maiden name if you have.
Your date of birth.
Your current postal address. Make sure it is right. Don't forget to mention postal code.
Previous addresses for last six years.
You will be charged a small fee from agencies as a processing fee. The amount of fee may differ from agency to agency so make sure for each of them. You have to enclose a cheque or a postal order of said amount with the application.
Once you have received your credit file, it is your foremost duty to check it thoroughly for any possible errors. If at any point you feel that the information given in the file is incorrect, you can contact to the agency and explain to them the reason why you think that the entry is wrong or incorrect and ask them to remove it from your file. Agency will reply you back within 28 days time by law. You will be told the reason for the entry or confirm you the deletion of the entry.
The file merely contains financial information about you and it will not contain the information of previous occupant of your address. However, it does contain the information about the person with whom you have a financial connection. Only the names of concerned persons will be given on the file no financial information will be given on your file.
If the file contains a name of a person that you are not financially connected to, you can apply for a Notice Disassociation. For this you have to write to the concerned agency with all the required information such as name, address, relationship with that person.
Mostly, the credit reference agencies work under a neutral, uninfluenced environment, but if at any time you feel that the agencies are not handling the matter in a proper way, you can contact and ask for assistance from the Information Commissioner. You have to provide the following information:
Your full name, address and telephone number
Name and address of the credit reference agency, and the agency's reference number
Details of the entry in question, why you think it is incorrect, and why you think it could be detrimental to your interests
After this, the Information Commissioner contacts the agency and will try to know their viewpoint. Later, you will be informed about the comments made by the agency.
You can also right a 200 words statement to your credit file, explaining the nature of disagreement. This statement will become the part of your file.
