Tips to Improve Your Memory

Most people believe that as we get older we lose our memory and when that happens we can't get it back, but in reality this is not true. The human brain is one of the most astonishing and complex anomalies known to mankind. Our brain has the ability to continuously adapt and change even when we reach old age, meaning that it can reshape itself in order to improve learning and memory. Anyone is capable of harness this ability, all it requires is the understanding of a few important tips on how to keep the mind at its peak.

Tip #1- Don't slack on your exercise or sleep

This cannot be emphasized enough; keeping our body fit and well rested is absolutely essential. When you keep your body nurtured and rested you are not only benefiting your muscles, bones and skin but also your mind. Physical exercise sends more oxygen to the brain, reduces the risk for disorders that lead to memory loss, and enhances how important brain chemicals and protein brain cells affect the mind. When you don't get enough sleep your brain can't operate to the best of its ability, this makes doing important tasks that involve a lot of brain power like studying or problem-solving more difficult than they have to be. Sleep is also needed for memory consolidation. By treating your body properly you can improve your ability to process and recall information.

Tip #2- Make time for friends and fun

Human beings are designed to socialize with one another, not only is it good for us emotionally but having relationships with others is great for brain health and stimulation. Staying connected with other people by doing volunteer work, hanging out with friends, or just talking on the phone is the best form of exercise for your brain. And just as we need friends and relationships we also need fun in our lives to help with keeping our minds healthy. It has been shown that laughing is not only good for you emotionally but is also good for the brain since laughter requires the use of multiple regions across the entire brain. Listening to a few jokes is also great brain exercise because by listening to the joke and working out the punch line you activate areas of the brain key to learning and creativity.

Tip #3- Manage your stress

If left unchecked chronic stress destroys brain cells and damages the region of the brain involved in the creation of new memories and the retrieval of old ones, called the hippocampus. One well known way to effectively reduce stress is by practicing meditation. Meditation has been proven to help reduce stress and prevent its negative side effects.

Tip #4- Eat more brain-boosting foods

Research shows that there are certain foods that we should and should not eat in order to improve out memory. Foods and drinks we should consume or avoid for improved brain health include:

Omega-3: Omega-3 fatty acids are proven to be extremely beneficial to improving brain health and lowering your risk of Alzheimer's disease. Fish, walnuts, ground flaxseed, pumpkin seeds, and soybeans are sources rich in Omega-3.

Saturated fat-Diets rich in saturated fat increases your risk of dementia and impaired concentration and memory so it's important that you limit the amount of saturated fat you take in. Animal products like red meat, whole milk, butter and cheese are primary sources of saturated fat.

Fruits and vegetables- Add more fruits and vegetables to your diet because they are filled with antioxidants, which work to protect the brain cells from damage. Colorful produce are particularly good sources of antioxidants.

Wine- Although too much alcohol has the potential to kill brain cells, having it in moderation can actually improve memory and cognition. Because it is rich in resveratrol red wine is the best option for improving memory. Other sources packed with this blood flow boosting flavonoid include grape juice, cranberry juice, fresh grapes and berries, and peanuts.

Tip #5- Workout your brain

In order to improve our memory we need to keep our brain active. The main reason why many adults begin to lose their memory by the time they reach a certain age is because they reduced the amount of exercise they give their brains. By the time we reach adulthood our brain has developed millions of neural pathways that help us process information quickly, solve familiar problems, and perform familiar task with minimal mental effort. In today's world many of us are use to sticking to the same routine, but by doing this we stop giving our brain a workout because it is familiar with everything. So in order to give our brain a workout we need to face new, more challenging problems. Virtually anything can be used as long as its something new, challenging and fun. Puzzles, crosswords, and Sudoku are just a few well known mind stimulators. In addition, there are also countless mind challenge games that can be found online and played for free.

As you can see, there is a lot you can do to improve your memory. A strong memory depends on a healthy brain, and just because you're at a certain age does not mean you have to lose it. In order to retain more information while studying, stay mentally sharp, or have a more successful work life all you need to do is keep your mind healthy and strong. Improving your memory is not some impossible ordeal; it is actually quite easy and fun as long as you know what to do.
