Tips to Solve Communication Problems In Relationships

Communication is the key to all long term relationships

, and often the root of most breakups. Below are two quick tips to help resolve recurring fights and maintain a healthy relationship.

Gauge The Importance Of Arguments

If you reflect back to your childhood, when you entered into an argument with siblings or friends the need to be right was paramount. The argument would evolve into a need to win, rather than being focused on the reason for arguing. It's a trait most children acquire because of the type of reinforcement they receive in classrooms. If you're right you get rewarded with good grads, if you're wrong you get poor grades. It firmly entrenches our need to be right and to win every argument.

While this scenario can be beneficial for encouraging children to complete their required tasks and get good grades, this need to be right wreaks havoc on relationships when there's an argument. It becomes easy to lose focus on what you're arguing about. Even if you know you're wrong, you may find yourself continuing to fight because you want to be proven right.

If you're in the middle of a lengthy argument that has lasted days or weeks, try to be as objective as possible to help gauge the importance of the argument. Are you continuing to argue because it's important, or has the fight continued because you want to win? Some relationships end because of silly arguments that evolved into massive fights, so you should always be aware that small arguments have the potential to doom your relationship.

How To Resolve Arguments

Most arguments can be resolved or at the very least lose intensity, by trying to identify with the other person's perspective. Many arguments begin to escalate when someone feels they aren't being heard or their opinion is of little importance. If you can take your partner's point of view and try to understand their issue, you can lower their defenses and begin to talk rationally. You don't have to agree with their perspective, or relent your position to end the argument. Empathizing with how the issue is affecting their life, and conveying that you understand their perspective can help ease the tension.

After resolving the argument it then becomes important to move forward and let the issue reach its end. Try to avoid harboring resentment or bring a past issue into a future argument.
