Tips to make your Home Environmentally Friendly
Unless you have been living on the Moon, you cant help but be aware of environmental issues such as global warming
. Increasingly we are being asked to cut down on our energy consumption and reduce our greenhouse emissions to help reduce climate change. But actually reducing our carbon footprint can be quite difficult and more often than not can involve sacrifices. But not necessarily, reducing energy consumption does not have to be about compromise, by reducing wastage we can still have all the benefits of our centrally heated homes and energy consuming gadgets whilst still reducing our carbon footprint and saving money! The home is perhaps the best place to begin as we consume more energy in our homes than anywhere else. We need electricity can gas to power our cookers, heaters, hot water systems, washing machines, tumble dryers, televisions, computers and an almost infinite number of appliances, gadgets and devices. The home is also one of the areas of our lives where we have most control of so its a great place to identify and eliminate energy waste around the home. The best approach is to split your energy consumption into its purpose and identify what you can do to cut down on the amount of power you consume. Here are some tips to get you started: Heating and Hot Water Most of us live in centrally heated homes that have a combined heating and hot water boiler system, however, many of us do not maximise its potential and are often wasting both energy and money unnecessarily. Firstly, ensure the loft is adequately insulated, a lack of insulation can cause enormous amounts of heat loss and having a loft insulated is not very expensive and will pay for itself in less than a year in some cases. Secondly, maximise the heat coming from the radiators by ensuring they are bled and there is no air to trap the system. Automatic radiator valves and bleeders are available to save you forgetting but it is not that a difficult task if you know what you are doing. Then try using heatkeeper panels or reflective radiator foil to bounce some of the heat off the walls back into the room. youd be surprised how much heat can get lost that way. Washing Day Not only are washing machines and tumble dryers energy hungry appliances washing day is often combined with the use none
eco-friendly detergents and chemicals. But washing day doesnt have to be bad for the environment and doesnt mean you have to walk around in dirty clothes. There are plenty of ways to reduce energy when we wash and dry our clothes and their are many
eco laundry products to help us. Dying clothes is perhaps one area where it is all too easy to turn on the tumble dryer. Of course, we cant always hang our clothes outside and nobody wants to have wet garments hanging off all the radiators and blocking the heat. But what about the good old fashioned clothes airer. These can be hung out of the way and your clothes can dry naturally with the heat that is rising throughout the room. Its surprising how quickly clothes can dry on a clothes airer and by not using the tumble dryer, the savings in both electricity consumption and on our electricity bills can be quite noticeable. When it comes to cleaning the clothes there is often no need to use powerful detergents. There are other methods such as eco balls that can clean clothes with any chemicals at all. Chemical free washing balls use ionized oxygen to activate water molecules and allow them to penetrate into the fibres of clothes to remove dirt. And there is no need to turn to chemical to remove limescale. Chemical free limescale removers take a similar approach to eco balls by softening the heavy deposits by magnetizing the water and similar devices for the toilet are available too. Around the Home These days nearly every room has a TV, computer, stereo or other gadget or appliance, all of which require energy and can often be causes of waste. One of the major problems of modern gadget is the dreaded stand-by button. When a TV or other device is in standby mode it is still using electricity (up to 15% compared to when it is on) and thats crazy if the device is not being used. Turning off devices can cut down a lot by reducing electricity use and there are even gadgets like standby savers and power down devices like the eco button that can do the job for you. Another great way of reducing electricity use is to use an electricity monitor to identify areas of waste. These range from really sophisticated professional electricity monitors to simple to use energy monitors and like most eco friendly products and energy saving devices they can pay for themselves by helping you to reduce your electricity bill whilst helping to
turn your home into an eco friendly one.
