Tipu's Palace – The Home of a Tiger

It was customary in an earlier day and age for kings and queens to maintain several palaces for them to reside in during different times of the year

. The summer home of Tipu Sultan, located in the state of Karnataka in India, is one of the most exquisite wooden palaces one will find. It is dubbed the Envy of Heaven' and Abode of Peace' due to its serene settings and luxurious ambience, making it an ideal getaway during the warm periods of the year.

The palace was founded as a mud fort in the year 1537 by Kempe Gowda and over the years many improvements were made. About two hundred years later it was fortified with stone and transformed into an elegant palace by Tipu Sultan, who was known as the Tiger of Mysore. Today, the bright paintings on the walls have dulled but are just as striking, the intricately carved wooden archways and pillars stand proudly with undiminished grandeur and the palace itself is majestic.

Inspiration for the palace is said to have come from the Windsor Castle. However, this mansion is unique in style as it is made in the Saracenic architectural design and is festooned with paintings, decorations, carvings and floral patterns. Within the premises of the citadel one can find a temple of the Hindu god Lord Ganesha, depicting the harmonious links between the people of the two religions during those times. A large collection of artifacts, coins and murals which belonged to the Sultan are on exhibit at the palace museum.
