Tis The Season To Give

There are so many ads, so many people and companies trying to show that what they

have is not a luxury, but a necessity, and that no matter how much you already have, you always need more. It is time to look outside, and spread some holiday cheer.

What do we see when we turn on the TV? We see ads or commercial about food, about candy, about computers and cell phones and furniture and so many other things that are very hip and trendy. But really, are this things necessary and important? Do we need this in our day to day life? Do we consider this things as the basic commodity in our home? Let us try to weigh things whether they belong to our "wants" or to our "needs".

Sure, in the current economy, so many people are struggling and saying they need a break just to keep their home, but how much of that do they really need? Some people keep large homes they cannot afford, have two or three cars when they cannot afford the mortgage payment, and are buying the latest phone and the newest tablet when they do not pay their phone bill. Or a married couple with no kids keeping a four bedroom house for just themselves, or a college student with a private bedroom and kitchen and storage unit, or an eight year old going to school with a web-enabled cell phone. There is just so much excess that the economic problems are so predictable.

Perhaps, instead of giving in to the third rate gimmicks and flashy commercials that interrupt the webisodes we all love, perhaps instead of getting that newest toy on the computer must have list, paying bills, setting some money aside for a rainy day, and applying some of the fund to a humanitarian effort would help build the economy a little, rather than break it down further with false support and bailouts.

It is, after all, the holiday season, a time for looking outward, looking how to give and share with others, a time of humanitarian surges and changes of heart, a cold season where ones own discomfort should encourage a looking for others to serve.

So get over those deceiving commercials that promise happiness but only create more greed and envy. Show them you are a better person, and look for someone to help this holiday season. Find a local charity or humanitarian organization, a soup kitchen or homeless shelter, because they will know who really needs help and how to give it, and make sure the people in need get what they need. Every little bit helps.
