Title - Is A Papillon Right for Your Family? by:Camille Goldin

The Papillon is a resilient, intelligent, playful

, intuitive, and charming dog. Since the Papillon ranks eighth as the most intelligent among all dog breeds, they are extremely easy to train. These dogs are basically accustomed to movement and rarely need encouragement to engage in athletic activities. Papillons are people-oriented dogs and will basically shadow you every chance they get. Believe it or not, they make great watchdogs as well regardless of their size. Papillons are brave and hardly realize how small they are compared to other dogs. But perhaps their greatest asset is their ability to adapt to a wide variety of lifestyles.

The Papillon truly is the top choice when it comes to toy breeds. However, with that said-even as a people-oriented dog, the Papillion is not always right for everyone. Specifically speaking, the Papillon may not be a good match for families with small children. Even though these dogs love companionship, due to their energetic nature, they may tend to get overwhelmed by little children who often resort to roughhousing and mischief.

This is why it is absolutely essential to socialize your Papillon as soon as you acquire it, preferably as a puppy. In doing so, you will be able to avoid the development of negative traits such as over timidity or on the flip side, high-strung behavior.

Another thing to take into consideration before having a Papillon in the presence of little children is the dog's fragility. Dogs such as Papillons can be easily injured. Sometimes, even with the best intentions, little children can end up hurting these dogs. In addition to this, loud voices and sudden abrupt movements-certain things that are quite common in households with little children, actually easily overwhelm Papillons. Unfortunately, if not kept in check, Papillons may end up developing defensive behavior.

This is not to say either that it is impossible to have a Pappilon around a small child. It is very possible, but it will surely require a lot of effort from all parties involved due to the Pappilon's natural instincts. For families with little children who choose to proceed with welcoming a Pappillon into their home, just know that you will need to do extra work when it comes to socializing your pet. Get the dog familiar with your child as soon as possible and make sure to keep all members of your family under close supervision.
