Title Tag 101 - The Proper Usage and the Importance of the Title Tag

The title tag is one of the most important tags because the search engines use it to describe your page in the search results page

. After you press the "search" button you are taken to the listings page with the results. You will see that every listing contains 3 or 4 rows of text. The very first line (in a larger font or bold) represents the title of your pages and usually the search engines pull this data from your title tag.

If your website is missing the title tag, the search engines will randomly pull some text on your website. You obviously don't want this to happen. You want to have 100% control over your title because this is what makes people click on your web page. Having an attractive title can significantly increase the visitors to your website.

The title tag is also important because the search engines use this tag to figure out what your web page is about. If you build a page on "vacuum cleaners" make sure you have this keyword phrase somewhere in the title tag (preferably at the beginning). This will not only make it easier for the search engines to determine what your website is about, but it if your competition does not have this term in the title tag, you have a better change of outranking them.

Now that we understand the impact title tags can have on our web page, let's look at how to use properly use them:

1. The title tag is placed inside the "head" tag

2. The tags should contain no more than 60 characters (including spaces). Anything over 60 characters will be omitted by the search engines.

3. Place the keyword phrase you want to target at the beginning of the Tag

4. Make your title tag attractive. This is overlooked by many webmasters but remember that the numbers of clicks to your web page also depend on how good your title is. If your title is poorly written, the person could ignore your listing and could click on the result bellow yours.

5. Try to omit common words such as "as, the, a" etc... so that you have more characters left for your keyword phrase and to make your title more attractive.

You will be amazed how many webmasters do not use this tag properly, or don't use it at all. Take advantage of this and use the tag the right way. Not only you will help the search engines decide what your web page is about, but it can also get a big boost in rankings and increase y our website visitors.
