When you think about the younger generation, images of a sex-draped Miley Cyrus and a chest-baring Taylor Momsen featured prominently on TV is more than enough to worry any parent. Teenagers nowadays are always looking for the next in' thing, and the truth is, the next big thing probably won' be as wholesome as milkshakes and watching drive-in movies. It could be something as simple as that new pair of Jimmy Choo's Paris Hilton's wearing, that Oscar De La Renta dress Angelina Jolie's wearing or something bold like Rihanna's red hair. The thing is though, even the nerdy social outcast kids on Glee are into getting a cool tattoos right now.
This is because the same fun thing that we did in the good old days just doesn't cut it anymore as kids now want something edgy that pushes the envelope. Teenagers now simply do not understand the complications or consequences that come through their actions. They've become bolder, more daring and have graduated to loving the exhilarating thrill that comes with breaking the rules of what used to be good and proper.
So what should we as parents do to stop this phenomenon from spreading? Are we supposed to just idle by and just stick to our role of providers or should we attempt to make a valiant effort in protecting the children from growing up too fast? After all, getting a tattoo surely can't be as bad as it sounds if everyone is getting one, right?
Different parents have different methods of disciplining their children. Some take the bad cop good cop approach; others stick to threatening while others actually do carry out their verbal warnings. Having said that, we are as a whole turning into a much more lenient troop of guardians who generally let our children grow up by themselves, thanks to the free Internet. The truth is, there is really nothing we can do to prevent the kids from doing what they want, even if it is inking their beautiful body.
A great example would be Kelly Osbourne, daughter of the godfather to heavy metal. The feminine spawn of Ozzy Osbourne and Sharon Osbourne has actually gone on the record to admit that her tattoos was a symbol of her rebellion against her parents, rather than symbolizing her appreciation for body art. This is a great example of how kids may turn against strict parents by opting for tattoos, regardless of how much pain and money they will have to spend for tattoo removal when they are older and decide to get it removed.
Simply put, if you get a tattoo when you are much too young to know any better, or if you were drunk or felt random, you would probably regret it when you are older. Parents can't do anything to stop kids from doing what they want, and tattoos are especially easy to be hidden underneath clothes. What both parents and kids can do though is to sit down and discuss together the kind of tattoos their children are in to and together, pick one cool tattoos to be inked on their bodies.
