For one thing, touch screens will enable phone makers to improve on tiny keypads
, along with technology like optical sensors. Touch screens to respond with tactile cues like vibrations, adding another dimension to users interactions with their phones. In fact, keypads, controls buttons and keyboards- on a slew of gadgets from mobile phones to camera to computers- are being replaced with a new generation of touch-sensitive screens. Until now, these screens have been confined to use on utilitarian applications like ATM machines and PDAs, that can recognize one finger or stylus at a time. But the new wave of slick touch screens do more than just react to your tapping and prodding them. They also respond to sliding, flicking and pinching actions, and sometimes react with tactile reactions of their own. For instance, Apple's iPhone, features a multiple-touch system-that means you can use two fingers at the same time. And even bigger gadgets are getting into the game. Computers like HP's TouchSmart PC , and Microsoft's Surface computer allow users to manipulate files without having to go touch a mouse. And they are not just being used to bring sci-fi technology out of movies into real life. Touch screens present an opportunity to build human intuition into products, to make technology insanely simple.
The electronic touch interface was invented in 1971 by Dr Samuel Hurst, a teacher at the University of Kentucky in the United States. It's Called a digitising tablet, it allowed scientists to record data from graphs by placing the graph on the tablet and pressing the paper against the tablet with a stylus. In year 1983, Hewlett Packard introduced what was probably the world's earliest commercial touch-screen PC-the -150. It had infrared transmitters and receiver surrounding the screen, which detect the position of any non-transparent object on the screen. As the touch-screen technology patents filed in the 1970s and 1980s expire, the cost of manufacturing touch-screen enabled displays went down with it. This led to its widespread use in the early 1990s on all kinds of devices including ATMs, information Kiosks, PDAs and tablet PCs.
