Tobacco Blends Within Cigar Lines

For many new to the world of cigar smoking, experimenting with different cigar lines

and different cigars in the same line is an enjoyable way to explore your options. You'll find a wealth of different flavors out there, but are there differences between the blends of different size cigars in the same line? Actually, yes, you'll find that different sized cigars have different flavors, even though they are from the same cigar line. Why is this? What do you need to know?

You'll find that flavors differ for a number of reasons from larger cigars to smaller cigars. For instance, with a smaller cigar, you'll have more flavor from the binder and from the wrapper mixing with that of the filler tobacco. So, even if the tobacco blend is identical (which it's not), you would still have different flavors. Smaller cigars are also narrower and shorter than their larger brethren, which tends to concentrate flavors more than with larger smokes.

With a larger cigar, you have a different situation. For instance, you'll have a larger quantity of filler tobacco, so those flavors will come through stronger. The wrapper, while larger than the wrapper used on a small cigar, makes up a smaller percentage of the cigar itself, so it has less influence in the way of flavors.

The blend used to create the filler tobacco also plays a role here. Both large and small cigars use lighter and darker tobacco throughout the body. However, dark tobacco is usually used to form the core of the body, while lighter tobacco is found around the outer edge. In a larger cigar, there is a heavier concentration of both types. In a smaller smoke, there is less of both, but it's not necessarily proportional to that used in the larger cigar, even in the same line. Therefore, you will have different flavors.

However, the flavor differences here are no reason to stick to just one thing. In fact, it should encourage you to get out and explore your options. You'll find that the wealth of flavors and aromas available is one of the most enjoyable things about cigar smoking. With a little experimentation, you will be able to start learning which blends you prefer and buying those cigars. Still, there's much to be said for variety and how much it can enhance your smoking experience. Don't be afraid to try new things just because you're unsure of the blend.
