Internet has come to mean different things to different people these days

. Online streaming of music, movies and games is fun for all. Even if your gramophones no longer work, you can depend on the Internet to listen to Frank Sinatra. Online libraries make a sea of books accessible for a nominal fee. It is a means to stay connected, be completely up to date and get to know whats out there. The US Military which was the brain child behind the Internet, would never have fathomed what it has become. The companies that make up the massive engine of the Internet, is now reflecting us. What used to take a few years to change in our personality, now takes a few days. We see real life stories, real time and not only does it give us goose bumps, but motivates us to take a step to change. This is not a way by chance. Several companies are now strategically placing what we would like to see in the right places, in the right doses at the right time.

A few months back, I was looking at a low calorie recipe online for lasagna, which would not hit the mid section too much. On the side I saw ads for good cheese, other cooking related websites, and more. What I did not expect was an ad for a fitness centre. How did the Internet know that what I really needed was to lose weight?

It turns out that when we look for handbags, we also see ads for shoes. When we look for educational courses abroad, you will see ads to vacation in the US or Europe. When you look for cars, you will also see ads for car accessories. The Internet is becoming a tool for companies to reflect our wishes back to us, recall our deep desires and take a small buying decision or make a life changing one.

The Internet is also ever changing. Just look at social networking. Orkut gave way to Hi5, then came Facebook and now Google+. Most of us may have an account in all of these sites. Keeping up with the times is not the only motivation. Experiencing a whole new platform to communicate and relate to your friends makes us want to explore new social tools.

The online space effects positive momentum in the offline world as well. As an example, Monster is a force for employers and professionals. But along with that, a slew of agencies, consultancies and training centers live off an online portal like Monster. In a few years, the online recruitment scenario may not function as it is today, just like it was quite different a few years back. The Internet changes repeatedly, over and over again, evolving to higher states.

The proactive nature of the Internet is the real amazement. Just when we think that the Internet has reached a peak in what it can do for us, a new horizon is reached. When books became available online, many of us thought that there could be nothing more. But then whole archives became available. This proactive trait and making available what we want even before asking, is an extension of our human will in the online world.
