Toenail Fungus Prevention - An Ounce Of Prevention Is Worth A Pound Of The Cure
If you've ever had a toenail fungus, then you know that it's a situation that people should want to avoid
. Not only does having a toenail fungus make wearing open-toed shoes and sandals a cringe-worthy experience, but it can also be painful if it isn't promptly treated and the infection worsens. There's an old proverb that states that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of the cure. Once you have a toenail fungal infection, it can take a long time for it to clear up because these infections take root deep in the nail, where it can be difficult for medicine to reach it. That's why toenail fungus prevention is so important.
Toenail fungus prevention is so easy that it's almost absurd. All you really need to do in order to prevent your toenails from getting infected is to keep them clean and dry. When you go to a swimming pool, gym shower, or other open, public wet area, just be sure to wear sandals when walking around. Fungi love damp places, so walking around barefoot in a wet area is like inviting an infection into your toenail. Diligently wearing sandals is the first rule of preventing toenail fungal infections from taking hold.
It's also important to make sure that your feet are clean and completely dry before putting on your socks and shoes. After you put on your socks and shoes, you're likely not going to take the time to air out your feet every hour. This means that whatever is in your sock will likely mingle with the sweat on your feet, creating a damp environment in which your feet will be trapped until you take off your shoes at the end of the day. If there are any fungal spores in that environment, then you could be heading right into an infection. Clean and dry socks and shoes are an important step towards toenail fungus prevention.
Finally, if you're serious about toenail fungus prevention, then you should regularly examine your toenails for any cracks or other irregularities. Keep your toenails neat and trimmed. This will prevent them from cracking, and will also prevent fungi and other contaminants from collecting under your toenails, waiting for an opportunity to infiltrate the nail itself. If you find any cracks in your nail, buff them down so that it's easier to keep the nail clean. By following these steps, you may never need to worry about treating a toenail fungal infection.
