Tom Hooper: Your Next Project Begins from the Ground Up

In the eyes of most movie producers, those dramas of serious type may have been "already dead". However, the British man Tom Hooper still insists on shooting the dramatic movies based on historical characters as the main roles all the time. From Elizabeth I, Lord Longford, John Adams to George VI who just "won" the Oscar award today, Hooper has been telling everyone those famous historical stories one after another from various remarkable perspectives.

Just two weeks before the announcement of Oscar awards on February 27, Hooper's The King's Speech swept the board at BAFTAs which is well known as the "British Oscars". And then, same as what happened to Slumdog Millionaire directed by his British fellow Danny Boyle two years ago, The King's Speech, also as a low-cost dark horse eventually won the Oscar for Best Picture this year after having previously swept all other top awards in the world film industry. Meanwhile Hooper also won the award for Best Director. He beat out David Fincher who is well-known for directing the hot movie "The Social Network".

After taking the Oscar statuette on the stage of Oscar ceremony, Hooper expressed thanks to his mother at the beginning of his acceptance speech. It was just four years ago that his mother, as a writer recommended him the script of The King's Speech. "So with this tonight, I honor you, and the moral of the story is Listen to your mother.'" Hooper joked.

Actually, The King's Speech is merely the third big screen work of Hooper. As a director that used to be a television film director in his early career, apparently the 38-year-old Hooper has not been well prepared yet to face the strong attentions to him that ensued from his great honors at Oscars. As was recently reported by Los Angeles Times, he has just declined the offer of the director's chair for Iron Man 3, as he would prefer to choose to wait for some more modest and sedate works to direct.

"Because a lot of the time it's your industry peers voting for you and that's very meaningful", said Hooper. "But the mistake is to think that winning an award will give you a special key to a special door and in that room lies the perfect script for you to do next. The truth is the hard work of filming your next project begins from the ground up."
