Top 10 Infrequent Diseases in the US for the First Half of 2010

Infrequent disease is a short term for infrequently reported notifiable diseases

. In the US, this is a long list of diseases ranging from anthrax to botulism to mumps to smallpox to yellow fever. You may want to know more about the infrequent diseases reported in the US for the first half of 2010. Here are facts according to the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) as reproduced and published by the US Government's Publishing Office.

1. Mumps. This is an infectious disease that is considered viral in nature. Mumps has been a common disease worldwide up until a mumps vaccine was introduced in the market. In 2009, a total of 2,069 cases were reported in the US, ranking second to Novel Influenza A virus infections. As of the first half of 2010, there were 1,684 cases reported.

2. Meningococcal disease. This is one infectious disease that carries a high mortality rate. It can be a cause to other diseases such as meningitis and sepsis. As of the first half of 2010, 333 cases of the disease have already been reported. This is broken down as follows: 111 for the A, C, Y and W-135 type; 47 for the serogroup B; 5 for other serogroup; and 170 for the unknown serogroup.

3. Listeriosis. This is an infrequent disease that can be acquired from eating food that is contaminated with bacteria. For the first 5 months of 2010, US reported 216 incidents. This is way below 2009's listeriosis cases counting up to 852.


4. Haemophilus Influenzae. This is an invasive disease for children below 5 years old. It is broken down into different serogroups and has 175 reported cases for the first half of 2010. This is broken down as follows: 8 cases for serotype B; 73 cases for nonserotype B; and 94 cases for the unknown serotype.

5. Typhoid Fever. Otherwise known by the name Salmonella typhi, this is a disease that is common all over the world. This is transmitted through the ingestion of either water or food that has been contaminated by feces of other individuals. In the US, 137 cases were reported as of June 5, 2010. In 2009, a total of 400 typhoid cases reported.

6. Vibriosis. This is a type of bacterial fish disease caused by the species known as Vibrio anguillarium. As of the first half of 2010, US reported 107 cases. This is 602 cases lower than the 709 incidents reported for the year 2009.

7. Streptococcal toxic-shock syndrome. Commonly caused by the streptococcal bacteria, this disease is manifested through low blood pressure or high fever in individuals affected by the condition. For the first half of 2010, 75 cases were already reported. There were 162 cases for the previous year.

8. Congenital Syphilis. Affecting children below one year old, this infrequent disease is experienced by a child whose mother has secondary syphilis. In 2009, US reported a total of 424 cases. For the first half of 2010, 68 cases have been reported.

9. Influenza-associated pediatric mortality. This has been one of the notifiable diseases in the US. As of June 5, 2010, 53 cases have been reported. This is lower when compared to the total of 359 cases reported in 2009.


10. Hemolytic uremic syndrome. This infectious disease is characterized by uremia or acute renal failure. It is a predominant disease that hits children although some cases may occur in adults as well. As of the first half of 2010, 46 cases have been reported. Previous year stats for the disease showed a total of 242 cases though.

From time to time, this top 10 list may also vary. As you can see, some of the infrequent diseases were higher in 2009 compared to their rankings for 2010.
