Three Things I Learned from a Creative Director Part II


This is a continuation of an article I wrote for a school assignment to research New York web designing companies. I was particularly interested in speaking with a Creative Directors about three main areas: branding strategy, logo design and homepage structure. These elements seem to be the cornerstone of professional website design and as someone who is breaking into the field, I thought I could learn a lot from hearing the perspective of established professionals. I spoke with Jesse Case, Creative Director of Skygate Media. They were recently voted Best in Business by Forbes Magazine and have some of the top website designers in New York. I thought it was best to make two separate articles because there is a lot of information. Look for Part I to read about homepage branding strategy and logo design.

Homepage Structures:

Skygate Media has built some of the top aerospace web design but they have also done more creative websites. The homepage structure, Jesse explained, has to be approached with a fresh perspective for every company and every industry. When I asked Jesse about boiling down the information for homepage structure, he told me that too many options can immobilize users. At the same time, they dont want to have to search for the information they need right away. Homepage design should allow room for current content so that it encourages people to return, but it should also be an invitation to stay a while and look at the information they never even knew they needed. There is such an art to this and the best way to learn is through trial and error. The best way to stay effective is to have a team that you really trust.


Any web agency that has a pre-conceived idea of how to format a site before diving into the process is doing a disservice to the company. Our team takes the approach of immersion. We are not experts in aerospace, financial services or New York Yankees memorabilia but we try to become as much of an expert as we can in terms of understanding what the users are looking for in a website, or mobile app. Our team puts ourselves in the position of knowing what information we need most accessible to have a positive user experience. We had to make our fair share of mistakes to learn this process.

Thanks to Jesse Case for taking the time to speak with a student who is eager to learn from web designers in NY and elsewhere. What they teach us in school is an important piece of the puzzle, but its not the whole picture.
