Top 10 States with Highest Cases of Gonorrhea for 2009
Gonorrhea is caused by a bacterium that can multiply and grow in the body
. In turn, this sexually transmitted disease or STD may affect the joints and even the heart valves in severe cases.
Gonorrhea ranks second to Chlamydia in the US when it comes to bacterial forms of STDs. In 2009, a total of 127,112 cases were reported in the country. Here are the top 10 states affected by the STD based on MMWR's report:
1. Texas. With 12,359 cases reported for 2009, Texas ranks first in the list of states affected by gonorrhea. This represents 9.72% of the country's total. As per the cases' ratio to the total population, the result is .05% of the 24.70 million residents.
2. California. Reporting 9,979 cases for the STD in 2009, the state represents 7.85% of the country's total. This is merely .03% of the state's total population of around 36.9 million people.
3. Florida. With 9,120 cases for gonorrhea, Florida is said to represent 7.17% of the country's total population affected by the disease. This is .05% of the state's total population estimated at 18.6 million.
4. Illinois. The state reported 8,786 cases for 2009, equivalent to 6.91% of the cases in the country. This is .07% of the total population for the state of around 12.9 million residents.
5. Michigan. Reporting 6,554 cases of gonorrhea in 2009, the state of Michigan represents 5.16% of the total cases in the country. This is .07% of the total number of residents in the state which is estimated at 9.969 million.
6. Ohio. With four cases behind Michigan, Ohio has 6550 incidents of gonorrhea for 2009. This is around 5.15% of the country's total and is nearly .06% of the 11.5 million residents of the state.
7. North Carolina. The state reported 4.80% of the country's total gonorrhea cases with a number of 6,099 incidents. This represents nearly .07% of the state's 9.38 million residents.
8. Georgia. Having 6,072 cases of gonorrhea, Georgia represents 4.78% of the US's total for 2009. This is .06% of Georgia's total of 9.83 million residents.
9. Louisiana. The state reported 4,262 cases, equivalent to 3.35% of the country's total. This represents nearly .095% of the state's total population of 4.492 million.
10. South Carolina. Completing the top 10 states affected by gonorrhea cases is South Carolina with 3,530 cases or 2.77% of the country's total. This is around .08% of the state's 4.56 million residents.
As you can notice, there are some states wherein the gonorrhea case ratio for the overall population is higher than those with the most number of actual incidents reported above. This may also change depending on the area where the state belongs to. Just the same, however, every person is warned when it comes to contacting this STD.
