1. Go to the Beach: Grab your towel and sunscreen and head to the beach. Relax on the shore and soak up some sun or jump on a jet ski and go for a ride on the sound. You can build a sandcastle, watch the sunrise, search for seashells, or choose from many different watersports. The beaches of the Outer Banks offer both leisure and adventure activities that will suit anyone.
2. See the Lighthouses: Five lighthouses are located along the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and Currituck Beach Lighthouse are open to climbing, while Bodie Island Lighthouse, Ocracoke Lighthouse, and the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse can be viewed from the base.
3. Look for Wild Horses: The wild horses of the Outer Banks are believed to be the ancestors of horses brought over by the Spanish when they set out to conquer the New World. A few companies in the area offer guided tours to see the Corolla wild horses, however you can also take the journey by yourself providing you have a four wheel drive vehicle.
4. Visit Roanoke Island: Roanoke Island was home to the English settlers who mysteriously disappeared in the late 1500s. Today the island has a whole days worth of activities from the Elizabethan Gardens to the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. During the evening, visitors can even see the dramatic outdoor performance of The Lost Colony, the story of the first Roanoke Island settlers.
5. Take the Ferry to Ocracoke Island: A free 40 minute ferry ride can take you to Ocracoke Island. Ocracoke Island is home to the Outer Banks most beautiful beaches and is a wonderful place to visit because it isn't very developed. Search for sea shells or go for a quiet stroll on the beach, it's a terrific place to simply relax.
6. Go Fishing: The Outer Banks offer excellent fishing whether you choose charter boat, pier, surf, or sound fishing. Whether you are a very experienced fisherman or simply want to try your luck, the Outer Banks fishing is fantastic for everyone.
7. Visit the North Carolina Aquarium: Located on Roanoke Island, the aquarium is a great place to check out a wide variety of sea life. Sharks, alligators, sea turtles, river otters, and many other creatures and be experienced there. The aquarium holds special events such as dive shows, live animal encounters, and feeding programs.
8. See the Wright Brothers National Memorial: Orville and Wilbur took their first flight on the Outer Banks and today you can see the original equipment they used as well as a replica of their 1903 flying machine.
9. Go Golfing: The Outer Banks of North Carolina offer golf courses with spectacular views of the ocean. It's a wonderful place to head out onto the green.
10. Visit Jockey's Ridge State Park: Jockey's Ridge State Park is a superb place for a hike. Home to the largest active sand dune system on the east coast, the park is also an excellent place to check out wildlife, fly a kite, try hang gliding or go sandboarding. Try hiking to the top of the tallest dune for an amazing view of the ocean.
