Koi fish, known more commonly as Nishikigoi in Japanese, are colorful variations of the common carp, its beautiful color variations and colorful patterns are what makes this carp different from that of the common carp. They are specially bred. New koi types might be discovered in the future because of the endless color and pattern variations possible.

Gosanke
This is the most popular variety of koi fish available in the market; it has 3 types. The Kohaku, Sanke and Showa.
Kohaku In the late 19th century, this koi is the first koi fish to ever be established as a kind of ornamental fish. Beginner koi fish collectors almost always have this koi type because it is the most common in the market. It is colored white with red patterns on it. A quality grade Kohaku does not have red spots on its fins, around the mouth and the lower portions below the eye, a color break should also occur just where the tail fin begins.
Sanke This koi type has 3 colors. It has a white body with red and black patterns. A quality grade Sanke should not have any black patterns on the head and the black pattern should not touch the red pattern.
Showa Like the Sanke, this koi type is also tri colored the difference is that its base color is black and not white like the Sanke. It is best known for its balanced pattern. A quality grade Showa should have a balanced pattern and the colors should not overwhelm each other.
Bekko
This koi type is known for its black pattern on a colorful background. This type can be easily confused with the Utsuri type. It is divided into 3 types.
Shiro Bekko It is known for its white body and black pattern. Unlike the Shiro Utsuri which looks similar, its black patterns are smaller than that of the Shiro Utsuri.
Ki Bekko This koi ype is known for its yellow body and black pattern. Unlike the Shiro Bekko that has a white base, this one has a yellow base, but its colors are balanced and have sharper edges.
Aka Bekko The red skinned koi fish with the black pattern. Just like the other two Bekko's this one also has a balanced pattern and sharp edges. This koi type, however, is more rare than that of the other two Bekko varieties.
Utsurimono
This koi type is characterized by its black, color base and colored pattern. It can have white, red or yellow patterns. It can easily be mistaken with the Showa, but unlike the Showa which have 3 colors, it only has 2 colors, a black base and a colored pattern. A balanced color pattern is what makes a high quality Utsurimono. It has 3 known varieties.
Shiro Utsuri This koi is very similar to that of the Showa, but unlike the Showa, it only has one pattern, which is white.
Hi Utsuri The koi with black skin and red pattern.
Ki Utsuri Characterized by its yellow patterns on its black skin.
