Almost everyone wants a set of strong, toned abs. They not only look good, they also help improve posture and help prevent low back pain.

The abdominal muscles respond very well to proper training, but unfortunately, out of all the different muscle groups, the abdominal muscles are the muscle group that's the most incorrectly trained on a regular basis.

Here are the top 5 ab training mistakes that you have to avoid if you want to develop the best abs possible:

1. Training abs every day. For some reason, many people think that they need to train their abs every day, even though they would never consider training any other muscle group, such as chest or legs, every day. The muscle tissue in your abs is no different than the muscle tissue in your other muscle groups, and just like with any other muscle group, your abdominal muscles need time to recover from a training session in order to get stronger and more defined. So never train your abs every day. Instead, train them two or three times per week on nonconsecutive days.

2. Performing countless sets and reps. Many people think that performing countless sets and reps will "burn off" fat from their midsection, but this is simply not true. Exercising a specific area of your body will build and strengthen the underlying muscle, but it will have no direct effect on fat loss in that area. The only way to "burn off" fat from your midsection (or anywhere else on your body) is to do aerobic exercise and follow a fat burning nutrition plan. Don't waste time performing countless sets and reps when training your abdominals. Instead, perform three to five sets each training session, 10 to 25 reps each set.


3. Performing reps at a fast speed. I see so many people at my gym who train their abs like they're in a contest to see how fast they can complete each rep. The problem is, the faster you perform each rep the more momentum and the less muscle power you use. You want your abdominal muscles to do the work, not momentum. So concentrate on fully contracting your abs each rep using a steady and controlled manner.

4. Performing only situps or crunches. Many people mistakenly only do situps or crunches when training their abs. Situps should not be a part of anyone's ab training program, as they can cause low back pain and they actually work the hip flexor muscles more than the abdominal muscles. Crunches are a good exercise, but a well rounded ab training program needs to include more than just crunches. There are plenty of good ab exercises to choose from, so make sure that you include several different ab exercises in your ab training program.

5. Performing only bodyweight exercises. Don't limit yourself to only bodyweight exercises when training your abs. Try using added weight on some of your ab exercises. Using added weight will increase the intensity and effectiveness of your ab workouts, especially once your abs become strong enough where many bodyweight exercises are not that challenging anymore.

In conclusion, by avoiding these five common ab training mistakes, you'll be well on your way to developing a set of strong, toned abs.
