At most catfish hatcheries, when it is time to harvest the fish, they are caught in nets when they reach a weight of 1.5 pounds. The catfish are then sold to customers who use them to stock other bodies of water or even used as meals at restaurants. The process is very similar to the farming of cows. (Cow's are not caught in nets though of course!)

Almost all of the country's farm raised catfish are harvested in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Only 5% of farm raised catfish are raised in the other 46 states combined.

Catfish are now one of the most popular fish in the United States. Through the years, catfish have always received a bad reputation due to their looks and the food they eat. Catfish have moved up to 5th on the favorite fish list.

Catfish are attainable all year both in the wild and at fish hatcheries. If you are an outdoorsman and would rather go out in the cold and catch you dinner, catfish are the fish for you. If you would rather let someone else catch it for you, just call a local fish hatchery or visit your local grocery store.

In 2005, there were over 500 million pounds of catfish produced worldwide. That is a lot of catfish! I'm sure glad I wasn't the person in charge of skinning all of those fish. Skinning a catfish is a very difficult task at first...once you try it, you will know what i mean!
