Furniture and home furnishings now mimic the fashion industry; trends are set, colour schemes change with the seasons and new styles are introduced. Society is becoming more and more adventurous when it comes to furnishing ones home with an ever growing number of home and property shows appearing on our television and interior designers popping up here and there to show us how easy it is to transform our home into a hospitable haven. Furniture is the key to creating any look within a home; this can then be enhanced by introducing the relevant accessories to add colour and texture to a room. Below is a selection of the main furniture categories and the ambiance they can generate within a home:
Oak Furniture
Oak furniture has made a strong comeback in recent years and replaced the once popular pine market. The beauty with modern day oak furniture is its ability to be applied to both traditional and contemporary living. True craftsmanship comes back into play with many of the new oak ranges; the more traditional styles of oak furniture like the Rustic Oak and the French Style Oak tend to be moulded so as to appear worn through time with rounded off edges and visible grain and distressing marks. This style of oak lends itself to the more country cottage' style living and enhances character within ones home; it's the kind of furniture that will age well and last a lifetime. The more contemporary styles of oak furniture such as the Oxford Oak are crafted using clean lines and usually manufactured using a lighter oak so as to compliment more modern day living. North American Oak is generally used in higher end oak furniture and is best kept as natural as possible in order to take advantage of the natural grain effect and knots that give oak its charm and character. This more contemporary style offered in modern day oak furniture has the ability to lend itself to pretty much any style home and can be complimented by pretty much any style and colour furnishings-versatility at its best!
French Furniture
French furniture is at the height of its popularity and has been recreated and modified slightly to fit into current day living. Still baring the hallmarks of aristocracy and rich upper bourgeoisie from around the globe during the 17th and 18th century; French furniture of today has the capability to be sympathetic to both traditional and modern day living. Modern day French furniture brings the carved detail and cabriolet style curved legs commonly used throughout the Louis and Regency periods to pieces such as chests, armchairs and dressers and finishes them in a stage by stage paint process to re-create the aged and distressed look from years gone by. More modern day French pieces have been tweaked slightly to still maintain the French style charm but more up to date colours such as pinks, silvers and black are used to create a more dramatic effect and can look truly show stopping when used in the right context.
Mirrored Furniture
Mirrored furniture is becoming increasingly popular within the UK market. More commonly known as Venetian furniture It first started out using etched detail on the mirrored glass giving it a very quaint and delicate appearance with some French influence, designs include floral scrolls and Grecian urns hand sculpted to create truly stunning pieces of furniture. Since then it has developed at an ever increasing rate and now covers a more contemporary field. Characteristics of the more modern designs in the Venetian mirrored ranges are sleek clean lines, simplistic but elegant pumpkin style glass knobs and leather seat pads. The mirrors follow a more chic squared off finish rather than the elegant curve used in the etched ranges. Whether your look is beautiful and luscious or cool and contemporary Venetian mirrored furniture has something to suit every taste and is not to be passed up.
Glass Coffee Tables
Coffee tables have taken a turn for the modern and can be found in one sheet of 12mm thick glass moulded to create numerous cool and contemporary designs. The new GeoGlass range of coffee tables has the function required from a coffee table but is also unobtrusive in their nature meaning they are the perfect addition to the smaller home with limited space. GeoGlass coffee tables come in clear glass and in some styles a smoked glass finish which creates a more dramatic and chic look to a room. Also within the GeoGlass range glass desks feature in both small and larger sizes which again act as a perfect home office space without being bold and garish as some tend to be but instead are sophisticated and unobtrusive to your lifestyle. GeoGlass coffee tables, desk and nests are versatile to fit into almost any style home and depending on your daring nature to add a touch of bold class the smoked styles are designed to do just this.
Designer Furniture
Designer classics are making a huge comeback and are highly desirable in the Interior Design world to add class and sophistication to a project. The Charles Eames Leather Chair and Ottoman is a prime example of this and is how armchairs are meant to be; comfy, stylish and built to last. The Barcelona occasional chair is also a perfect example of style at it's best, with button detail and sleek chrome bar frame these chairs come in both black and white leather and you can guarantee that both of the above will be easily recognisable to your guests as a style icon. Another iconic piece that is a must when trying to establish a funky retro interior is the ever so chic Arco Lamp with either a black or white solid marble base. This lamp has an adjustable arm that expands out in an arc down to a round bowl shaped lamp that sits perfectly over a coffee table, sofa or dining table. No need for any centre pieces with the Arco Lamp this speaks for itself.
No matter what look and feel you want to create within your home there is something on offer these days to suit everyone and anything. My advice to anyone looking to kit out their new home or room is really think about what style, theme, feel you want to create but most importantly express yourself and be creative.
