When your laptop breaks your first reaction is probably to finish the job by throwing it against the wall

. When your current laptop breaks it always seems like the perfect excuse to buy a new one and sometimes it is, but before you leap online or down the highstreet, take a minute to ask yourself a few questions and figure out if a new laptop is really the best solution.

1. Transferring all your data from an old machine to your new one can be an arduous process, and often in result in your losing some files permanently. If you simply get your current, although broken, laptop fixed you maintain your data as it was, your desktop as you remember it and all files saved in familiar places, this can be a lot more convenient than getting a whole new laptop.

2. If the cost of getting it your current laptop repaired is covered by the manufacturers warranty or similar such as an extended service agreement. If so then you can get it fixed for no additional cost, which is obviously a lot cheaper than shelling out hundreds of pounds for a new model.

3. Only purchase a brand spanking new laptop if its going to be better than your current model in every way, otherwise theres no point. So to get a latest spec laptop youre going to have to pay at least 300, probably more for a decent manufacturer. If repairing your broken model is going to be less expensive than this, then thats the route you should take.

4. Get your laptop repaired if youve had it for less than three years. Your hard drive and power supply should last between three and six years without any problems. You can expect that other mechanical drives lifespan to differ depending on their usage, and expect electronics to last for many years after everything else.

5. Youve become emotionally attached to your laptop and it holds such sentimental value that you cant possibly imagine replacing it. This can be true, but if needs must, you should probably buy a new one, while keeping your broken model close to your heart.

Its definitely tempting to get a nice shiny new machine, but its worth taking the time to work out whether its justified. Often getting your current laptop repaired is going to be far cheaper than buying a new one and there are some great technical engineers who specialise in not only fixing laptops but also in repairing particular faults.
