Some of the most popular movies these days are based on old comic books that were

once only popular with geeky kids, who stayed up late at night reading them under the covers with a flashlight while wearing their thick black glasses and slimy glow-in-the-dark retainers. But now these films are making millions of dollars in the box office, and starring major actors like Toby McGuire, Christian Bale, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Edward Norton. These movies attract audiences with their vigilante fantasy plotlines, their sweeping romances, and their explosive special effects (which are made even better when watched in high definition).

Seeing these films in the theaters can be an electrifying experience. But now with the great deals on satellite TV movie packages and the advanced HD technology of most modern televisions, watching them at home can be just as great. So when you are channel surfing on a regular Tuesday night, which super hero movies should you make sure to stop and watch when you see them?

1. The Incredible Hulk

This Edward Norton version is one of the best Hulk movies yet. Unlike many super hero movies, Nortons character transforms into the Hulk against his will, due to scientific experiments gone awry. He is not trying to use his powers for good, but rather to escape those who would like to use it for evil. The sexual chemistry between Norton and Liv Tyler is palpable. And this is definitely one you want to catch in HD watching Norton transform into a giant green killing machine is an experience in itself.

2. Batman Begins and The Dark Night

Every couple of years a new Batman movie is made. Some are amazing (see: Michael Keaton/Jack Nicholson); others, not so much (see: George Clooney/Arnold Schwarzenegger/Uma Thurman). Put these two latest films in the former category. Christian Bale is perfect for a dark Bruce Wayne, and the sequel features Heath Ledger as the Joker in one of his final and most excellent performances before his untimely death in 2009. Other cast members include the excellent Aaron Eckhart, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, and Morgan Freeman.

3. Spider-Man I-III

This is another case of a long-popular super hero being made into another series of movies. This Toby McGuire version has produced some of the highest-grossing box office movies of all time. Spider-Man III raked in $151,116,516 on its opening weekend alone in May 2007. The upside down kiss between McGuire and Kirsten Dunst in the first film (which came out in 2002) has become an iconic romantic scene in cinema. Watching the costumed vigilante leap through Manhattan using nothing but spider webs is made even cooler in high definition.

4. Kick Ass

This 2010 film about a teenager who turns himself into a vigilante super hero with nothing more than a snorkeling suit was a surprise hit earlier this year. The plot appeals to geeky kids everywhere, and add a young girl who kicks some serious but herself and you have yourself a recipe for success. Nicholas Cage has a big role in this movie, too, delivering his strongest performance in years.
