Top 5 Things To Remember When Tree Planting

Trees are one of Mother Nature's greatest gifts

. They produce so many of the things that make life good, like fruit, nuts and spices; rubber and cork; cacao coffee beans. Trees breathe in the carbon dioxide that all living beings exhale and convert it into oxygen. They are effective in combating the greenhouse gases which are produced from the burning of fossil fuels and which are to blame for the warming of our atmosphere. It is therefore not surprising that a great many of us would like to have at least one tree in our garden.

Tree planting is not rocket science. There are only five things to remember - and they are set out below.

Firstly, before you actually plant a tree, you will need to decide which one would be most suitable. Consult a good tree nursery or horticultural society in your area, as they will be able to give you expert advice, after taking into account the size of your garden and the size of the tree when it matures, your needs, the soil type, and wind and weather conditions.

Next, once you have decided on the best tree for your garden, you will need to prepare for its arrival. You will need to dig a hole deep and wide enough to accommodate the roots when they are spread out. If you want to use a fertiliser, this is the time to do it.

Now you need to choose the tree to be planted. Select one with a healthy root system, preferably wrapped in burlap - not one that has its roots curled into a tight ball or is pot bound. Ensure that there is no decay or disease present.

You are almost there now. When it comes to the actual tree planting, make sure that the soil comes up to top of the root ball, or the spot where the colour changes on the tree trunk. If you plant your tree in a hole which is too shallow, the roots will dry out, which will halt growth and make it susceptible to diseases and pests. Check that the tree is upright. Do not pack the earth around the roots too firmly, as this will exclude air from reaching the roots; but ensure that no air pockets remain. Make sure that the roots are spread out evenly and that none of them turn upward. Once you have filled the hole with the same soil you removed to create the hole, you need to water your tree very well, but be sure not to over saturate the area, as this could lead to root rot and all sorts of other problems.

Finally, to ensure the health of your new tree, you will need to put mulch around it (but keep it away from the base of the stem) to control the spread of weeds (which vie for the nutrients in the soil), conserve moisture, nutrients and light. Water regularly, so that water gets to the full depth of the root system and you will have a beautiful tree forever.
