In Australia the rating system was introduced in 1986 giving consumers an easy comparison and is now mandatory for many appliances not just in the kitchen.

Electric or gas

There are arguments for both styles of stove cook tops and ovens and some cooks have very strong preferences for one or the other. While gas is a limited resource, electricity relies on coal burning for production so both forms of power have an impact on carbon footprint.

Gas is recognised for giving instant heat and better control of temperature. Electric stove tops are easier to clean and the power is cleaner than gas in the home.

Cooking techniques

Caring about the environment is not just about the choice of appliances as your habits can make a difference too. Proper planning of meals when using an oven can mean energy savings by cooking more than one dish at a time in an oven and using the heat after to keep food warm.

If using gas the heat does not need to be turned on till you need it because of the instant effect. Check recipes for pre-heating time and only turn the oven on ahead if the recipe calls for it. Keep lids on to retain heat on the stove top or in the oven, this will use less power.

Maintenance

Home appliances that are well looked after will cost less to run and have a longer life span meaning energy savings on an ongoing basis and preventing unnecessary replacement of the appliance. Stove tops and ovens are often neglected on a daily basis but a quick wipe over after every cooking session will prevent the build of grease and grime.

Dishwashers

Used wisely, dishwashers can save power and water. By collecting your dishes over the day and only running the cycle when you have a full load you are saving water and power on your daily clean ups. Many models now come with the additional feature of not having to rinse the plates before hand.

Maintaining a dishwasher is as easy as checking and cleaning out the filter regularly. Running an empty cycle every few months will clear any build up in the hoses.

Being aware of the carbon footprints we make by our use of electrical appliances goes a long way in saving precious resources. The beauty in being conscious of our power and water use means savings on electricity, gas and water bills.
