Top 5 Tips to the Full Moon Party Koh Phangan

The Full Moon party in Thailand has become a slightly clichd activity but, who cares, it's great fun and something that will stick in your memory for years to come. On Thailand Holidays this once in a lifetime experience is closer than you'd think.

The home of the Full Moon Party is Koh Phangan or Koh Pha Ngan depending on what you read. The Koh Phangan Full Moon Party (note that dates do vary from month to month) is one of the largest beach gatherings in the world. Some estimate that 20,000 people descend on the Island each month for an evening of hedonism and sense-smacking beach-side drinking, dancing and fun.

The Island is somewhat dedicated to this monthly swathe of visitors. This surprisingly makes the experience of being on Koh Phangan a pleasurable one. You don't get hussled for business quite as much (they don't need it) which means it's a rare opportunity to speak with the local people on a more down-to-earth basis. In addition, with its monthly Full Moon and mid-month Half Moon Party trashing, the Island is regularly made clean and tidy.

It's advisable to stay on Koh Phangan for a full five days, encompassing the Full Moon Party. Try and get a spot at Coral Bay Bungalows. They hold the best pre-Full Moon Pool Party around and are slightly set-back from Haad-Rin beach the site of the official Full Moon Party. The rooms are spacious and the welcoming is warm. They're wooden apartments essentially and have all you need hot water, clean beds and are surprisingly quiet considering the madness going on round the pool below. As a bonus, it has its own mini-beach which is always a treat. Beware the pool however, it gets pretty gross towards the end.

Here's the top 5 tips for the Full Moon Party itself

Glow Paint. Neon lights are everywhere and you'll get a great reception if you go all-out, head-to-toe glow paint. You'll find it sold everywhere. A little note white glow paint works the best.

Buckets. The beach will be full of shack-based bars selling the standard Sangsom rum-based buckets mixed with Coke for 150-200 Thai Baht. I'd suggest going literally two-meters up one of the side streets and getting a 250 Thai Baht bucket they're proper cocktails and will leave you with less of a post-Sangsom buzz the next day. There's a great bar up the side of Paradise Bungalows (right on the beach) that sells amazing bucket sized Mojitos!

Get in quick. I'd suggest getting your accommodation down before you even arrive in Thailand the best places go fast. This is especially true if you're going to the home of the Full Moon Party': Paradise Bungalows. Bit of a tip: if you find yourself stranded, head straight to the beach and wander the streets that lead off it there are cottages and smaller guest houses that don't need to advertise their business because of their location you might find a space free there.

Be safe. Despite the temptation of Mushroom Mountain at the far end of the beach, selling Magic-Mushroom smoothies, drug taking is a massive no-no in Thailand. There is also a history of people being targeted by con-artists. The police will always take the locals side so it really is not worth the risk.

Avoid the Fire. Synonymous with the Full Moon Party is fire flamed skipping ropes, throwers and bonfires. You're encouraged to test your nerve jumping over the skipping rope, which is literally ablaze. This is sooo not worth it. The next day, the amount of bandages on scorched bodies is not a nice sight.
