Top Autumn Walks In The North Of England

Autumn is a magical time to walk in landscapes and climates such as England

. With all it many deciduous trees, forests and rolling hills new colours come to life as Autumn beckons the end of summer and the beginnings of our long winters. There are many well-known walks in the North and South of England I shall cover the North of England first.

The North East of England is renowned for its rich history and wonderful landscapes. For example, in the small historic town of Bellingham in Northumberland there is a very special walk through a densely wooded gorge. The delightful winding path is said to be inhabited by mystical sprites but if those sorts of tales do not enchant you then just the undisturbed beauty of this walk should suffice. There is a waterfall at the end of the walk and waterproof hiking gear is recommended if you are hoping to get close to the waterfall. As well the stunning nature wildlife such as the now rare red squirrels and an amazing array of wild funghi can be spotted.

In the North West you will find the Lake District with a wealth of walks that will be especially rich in colour and wildlife activity in the autumnal months. The West of England is known for being wetter than the east and this is not just the stuff of myths so do make sure you are well equipped with sturdy hiking gear and outdoor clothing. Grizedale Forest is a popular spot with its art trail filled with many sculptures.

The Peak District, in Derbyshire is also a top walking destination. The more challenging walk at Stanage Edge offers epic landscape views from a clifftop and a slow steady climb that is laden with deciduous trees providing a colourful carpet for this otherwise arduous route. The massive county of Yorkshire is green with many a river or stream careering through hills and woodland. For example, Hackfall Wood in Masham, North Yorkshire is quintessential England countryside at its best an array of wild and ancient trees painted by Turner himself and loved by Wordsworth.

With the National Trust, Woodland Trust and Forestry Commission, the remaining forests in England are protected as conservation areas and managed sustainably. Hence, with the right hiking gear we walkers can enjoy them for generations to come. The weather may be cold, wet and windy but with the right mens and womens outdoor clothing, this can only make the final pub or cafe stop all the more rewarding.
