Top Cities in Anhui Province
Anhui, with a population of over 59 million, is an inland province in Southeast China
. It stretches over the Yangtze River and Huai River, and is adjacent to six provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hubei, Henan and Shandong. Hefei City, the capital of the province, has many attractions as a result of its 2,000 years of history.
1. Hefei
Lying between the Yangtze River and Huaihe River,
Hefei is the capital city of Anhui Province and is ranked as one of the fifty strongest cities in China. Close to the coastal area, Hefei plays an important part in connecting the eastern and western areas of China while also linking the south and the north. Covering an area of 7,266 square kilometers (about 2,805 square miles), Hefei is known as the central tourist city of the whole province.
2. Huangshan
Huangshan City is a region with a long history and splendid cultures. Shexian and Yixian Counties were established more than 2,000 years ago. In the Jin Dynasty (265-420) Huangshan City was called Xin'an Shire. Until the
Song Dynasty (960-1279) when the name was changed to Huizhou, the city was famed for Hui businessmen, Hui carvings, Xin'an school of painting, Xin'an medicine, Hui architecture, Hui cuisine, and Hui opera (one of the tonalities of Beijing Opera). Also notable are the scenic spots of Yellow Mountain (Mt. Huangshan) - a key point of interest in ancient China, the Tangyue Memorial Archway, the Tunxi Ancient Street and the ancient villages of Yixian County . Historians at home and abroad regard Huangshan City as a natural history and culture museum of China.
3. Chaohu
Location: Situated in central
Anhui Province, Chaohu City borders the Yangtze River on the south with one of the five largest freshwater lakes, Chaohu Lake on its north. It neighbors cities including Hefei and Nanjing and is separated from Wuhu by Yangtze River. History: The history of Chaohu area as a county can be traced back to the Qin Dynasty (221BC-206BC). In the following years, this land of fish and rice left behind a number of historical sites ranging from the Paleolithic Age to old battlefield and ancient buildings. After the establishment of the PRC, Chaohu Special Administrative Area was established in 1949 and the Chaohu City was established in 1982.
4. Xuancheng
Location: Xuancheng City is situated in the southeastern region of Anhui Province, neighboring Huangshan to the south, Chizhou to the west and Wuhu to the north. To the east, it is bordered by Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces. History: As early as the Western Han Dynasty (206BC-24AD), Danyang Shire was established on this region with Wanling (presently Xuanzhou District) as its capital city. Since then, Xuanzhou has been the political, economic and cultural center of administration for two thousand years. However, the name of Xuzhou was changed during the Sui Dynasty (581-618).
5. Bengbu
Location: Situated in the north of Anhui Province, Bengbu is bordered by Huainan City in the south and neighbors Jiangsu Province in the east. The Huaihe River flows through the southern part of the city's territory.
History: In prehistorical period, this region was inhabited by groups of tribes. Its present territory partly belonged to several states and kingdoms before the Qin Dynasty (221BC-206BC) unified China. Since then, the city was under the administration of the shires and prefectures in this area.
