Top Dressing Uneven Lawns
Uneven lawns can be a real problem for many lawn owners, not only are they unsightly, but the unevenness often leads to the sod being scalped from mowing as the lawn mower wheels dip lower into the depressions in the lawn surface, which in turn lower the blades and remove the top of the lawn.
While repairing an uneven lawn may seem like a difficult task, it really is not. By quickly analysing the lawn surface, we can then easily choose the correct method to top dress or repair an uneven lawn.
First, the lawn owner must carefully look at the depth of the depressions in the lawn's surface, the depressions will either be minor, which will require simple top-dressing. Or the depressions may be deeper, in which case the holes will need to be repaired by lifting up the sod and applying soil underneath, instead of on top of the grass.
For shallow depressions, the lawn owner will need to use some clean, free-flowing sand, or some soil from the property which is similar to what is underneath the lawn. The depressions are then lightly filled in to a depth of no more than half an inch at a time, and always allowing some green leaf tips to still be showing.
If the depression is deeper than half an inch, then simply repeat the process until the lawn becomes even in the affected area. Repeat top-dressing applications should be done 2-4 weeks apart.
After each application of top-dressing, the lawn will need to be watered so to allow the sand or soil to work its way into the thatch of the lawn. No need to be excessive with the watering, but a normal length of time for you watering cycle is recommended.
For lawns with much deeper depressions, which would normally be over 3-4 inches deep, the lawn will not be top dressed. Instead, the affected area of sod will be carefully removed with a spade and sand or soil placed directly into the existing soil to raise the height of the lawn.
The spade is first used to cut parallel lines into the surface of the sod of the affected area, these are usually the width of the spade's blade apart from one another. Once this is done, the spade is then dug into the turf to a depth of around 3-4 inches and the lawn is lifted up in exactly the same manner as new roll-on sod.
Now the soil is topped up to the correct level with extra sand or soil, and the strips of lawn are then replaced back where they came from.
Special care will need to be taken whenever this type of repair is undertaken. The affected area of sod which was repaired will need to have extra water applied to it several times a day during the first week. Followed by slowly reducing the watering frequency over the next 2-3 weeks until the affected lawn has fully recovered and set down new roots.
The repaired lawn may still be slightly uneven as the new soil slowly settles. If this happens, then simply apply a light top-dressing remedy as outlined in the beginning of this article.
As always, any lawn repair work should always be done when the lawn is in an active growing season, and when it is not subject to extremes of weather such as high temperatures, snow or frost.
