If you have an unlimited budget, go for it, otherwise, invest in good energy efficient appliances that fit well in your space, and spend your budget elsewhere. This goes for gadgets as well; do you need that extra plumbing for the pot filler over the stove? Next, when you are shopping around it may be hard to pass up a good deal. Many people see the word granite and immediately think that will be the best option for their kitchen. Granit is lovely, and sought after by many new homebuyers, however, low end granite can be very unattractive. Make sure you see the piece of granite you are purchasing. Counter tops are a big investment and sometimes going with a less trendy material will give you something beautiful at a lower cost. Spending extra money on beautiful countertops is almost always worth your investment.

Many contractors are now pushing for the addition of a small kitchen on each level of a home. Usually these consist of just an apartment size or smaller refrigerator, maybe a sink, and a microwave. The reality is, most people do not really need these in their homes and the energy costs usually out way the desire for convenience.

Usually in design you are encouraged to personalize your space and create something that reflects your personality. The kitchen is the one place where you may want to tone that down a little. When you are choosing semi-permanent dcor like cabinets, countertops, flooring, and tile backsplashes, you want to avoid making any extremely personal design choices. Keeping the style of your kitchen simple will make it easier to change with the seasons and as your taste changes. Let your personal style shine with items that can be easily changed like hand towels, dishes, and small appliances.

The most important thing to remember is a kitchen is a practical room in your home. Save the fashion or function elements for other rooms in your house. Just because something looks good, does not mean it will look good forever. Countertops that are difficult to maintain will require lots of work that you may quickly tire of doing. Lighting that has many intricate details can also degrade quickly because grease from cooking and dust build up in the small crevices and are hard to clean.
